Chapter 10

Before Dr. Eleanor Vance could break the red wax seal on the manila envelope, the heavy glass doors of the archive burst open with a resounding crash. Arthur Vance strode into the quiet reading room, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his immaculate black suit rumpled from his frantic dash through the streets. Behind him stood two burly corporate security guards in dark tactical vests, their presence instantly shattering the scholarly tranquility of the historic building. Several researchers gasped and scattered backward, pulling their chairs away from the center aisle. Arthur’s eyes darted wildly across the room until they locked onto Clara standing beside the front desk, and then onto the manila envelope resting in Dr. Eleanor’s trembling hands.
Arthur marched down the central aisle, his face twisted in a desperate, ugly rage. He barked an order at the security guards to seize the package immediately and detain both women for trespassing and industrial theft. Dr. Eleanor stood her ground, clutching the envelope tightly against her chest, her voice ringing out with sharp, authoritative defiance as she warned Arthur that security guards had no legal jurisdiction over historical archives. Arthur laughed hysterically, shouting that laws were written by men with capital, not by bitter historians living in the past. He reached out to rip the package from his aunt’s hands himself, crossing the final line of civility in his frantic bid for self-preservation.
Just as Arthur’s fingers were about to brush against the red wax seal, a calm, commanding voice echoed from the shadowed entrance behind the security guards. Julian Sterling stepped out from the dim corridor, flanked not by corporate thugs, but by two uniformed federal marshals and a city police detective. Julian’s expression was an impassive mask of absolute control as he announced that Arthur Vance was formally under arrest for corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and witness intimidation. The two security guards immediately froze, realizing the utter futility of resisting federal law enforcement, and stepped back with their hands raised. Arthur whipped around, his face turning an ash-gray as he stared at the federal agents closing in around him like a net made of steel.
