Chapter 7 - The Video That Turned Everyone Against Us

By seven that morning, both boys were at County General Hospital.

Eli was receiving treatment for an asthma attack and exposure to cold water.

Cole was being examined for a leg injury, exhaustion, and hypothermia.

Nathan was sitting on an examination bed while a nurse cleaned and dressed his arm.

For the first time in almost twenty-four hours, I allowed myself to believe they might all survive.

But I had no idea how quickly that relief would disappear.

Denise remained beside Cole.

She refused to leave his room.

Every few minutes, she reached out and touched his hand.

I understood that need.

After everything we had imagined during the night, the simple warmth of our children felt miraculous.

Nathan watched me from the examination bed.

"Are you mad at me?"

I looked at him.

"Yes."

His shoulders sank.

Then I stepped closer.

"And I'm grateful you're alive. Both things can be true."

He nodded.

I sat beside him.

"You lied to me for eight weekends."

"I know."

"You put yourself in danger."

"I know."

"And you kept something from me that could have helped people."

He wiped his eyes.

"I didn't know what else to do."

I reached for his hand.

"Then you should have asked me."

He looked down.

"I was afraid you'd make me stop."

Those words hurt more than I expected.

My son had been frightened of disappointing me.

So frightened that he had chosen to face dangerous strangers and an abandoned building rather than trust me with the truth.

Before I could answer, Sergeant Ruiz appeared in the doorway.

She told us that detectives were interviewing the displaced families.

Investigators had also begun examining Mercer Temporary Housing's contracts.

The locked service gate had been photographed, and the chain had been preserved as evidence.

Dean Pike was being questioned.

But there was a problem.

Pike claimed he had been instructed to secure an empty building.

He insisted he had never known anyone was trapped below.

Nathan sat upright.

"That's not true."

Ruiz looked at him.

"Tell me what you heard."

"One of the men said someone was still inside. I heard it."

"Can you identify the speaker?"

Nathan hesitated.

"Not for sure."

Ruiz nodded.

"Then we'll keep investigating."

She left us with instructions not to respond to anyone asking questions about the case.

Unfortunately, it was already too late.

At eleven that morning, my phone began ringing.

First my neighbor.

Then my sister.

Then a woman from Nathan's school.

Each person asked the same question.

"Laura, have you seen the news?"

I opened the local news website.

And my stomach turned.

A headline accused two teenagers of illegally entering a condemned industrial building and creating a dangerous situation that had required an emergency rescue.

Beneath it was a photograph of Nathan.

He was standing beside one of Holloway Mill's metal gates.

His face was partially visible.

His hands were wrapped around a chain.

I stared at the picture.

Someone had released security footage from the mill.

The accompanying report claimed the video showed one of the boys securing an entrance shortly before the rescue.

The implication was unmistakable.

My son might have been responsible for trapping his own best friend.

I immediately called Denise.

"Have you seen this?"

Her voice sounded stunned.

"Yes."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

"Laura, why is Nathan locking a gate?"

I looked toward my son.

He had already seen the image.

His face had gone pale.

"Mom, that's not what happened."

I wanted to believe him.

But after sixteen nights of deception, I no longer knew which truths he had told me and which ones he had hidden.

"Nathan," I said quietly, "did you put that chain on the gate?"

He looked at the floor.

Then he answered.

"Yes."

I felt my heart drop.

May you like

And then he added something that made the situation even worse.

"But somebody cut the video before the important part."
