Chapter 5

The air inside Laboratory 14-B smelled faintly of isopropyl alcohol, ozone, and fresh coffee. Rows of gleaming stainless-steel centrifuges, automated pipettes, and high-resolution electron microscopes hummed with a quiet, efficient energy. For Clara, this room was a sanctuary—a place where chaos was replaced by empirical truth.

She stood before a digital workbench, her fingers inputting sequence data into the genetic mapping software. Across the lab, two junior researchers—quiet, hardworking graduate students she had personally handpicked from her university department—were methodically preparing cell cultures.

“Dr. Vance,” her lead assistant, a sharp young man named Leo, called out without looking up from his microscope. “We’ve got a variance in the third peptide sequence. The folding rate is twenty percent faster than the control group.”

“Check the temperature regulation in the centrifuge,” Clara replied instantly, walking over to peer through the eyepiece. “If the thermal baseline shifts even half a degree, the protein structure destabilizes. We need absolute precision.”

As she adjusted the focus knob, the heavy glass door of the laboratory hissed open. Dr. Thorne stepped inside, accompanied by an older woman in a tailored navy suit with sharp, intelligent eyes.

“Clara, I’d like to introduce Dr. Evelyn Hayes,” Thorne said, gesturing to the woman. “She’s the head of our medical ethics division and a member of the board of directors.”

Clara straightened up immediately, wiping her hands on a sterile cloth and offering a polite nod. “Dr. Hayes. It’s an honor. Your work on cellular regeneration protocols is required reading in our department.”

Dr. Hayes stepped closer, looking past Clara to examine the digital readouts on the central monitor. Her expression was unreadable, a mask of decades of corporate survival. “Flattery will get you far, Dr. Vance, but results will get you farther. I read your preliminary notes on the synthetic enzyme project. It’s ambitious. Some might say recklessly so.”

“Ambition is only reckless when it lacks data,” Clara replied evenly, bringing up the comparative graphs on the touchscreen. “We aren’t trying to rewrite cellular biology, Dr. Hayes. We’re simply removing the biological bottlenecks that prevent natural healing in damaged neural tissue.”

Hayes studied the graphs for a long moment, her eyes darting across the statistical models. Slowly, a look of profound respect replaced her initial skepticism. “You’ve mapped the entire enzymatic pathway in under forty-eight hours.”

“I’ve been working on this model since my junior year,” Clara admitted. “I just didn’t have the hardware to run the simulations until now.”

“Well,” Hayes said, turning to face Clara directly. “Your father’s lawyers have been calling the executive office all morning, trying to file an emergency injunction against your employment contract, claiming you are a dependent minor under family law.”

Clara didn’t blink. “I turned twenty-two six months ago. Furthermore, my emancipation documents were notarized yesterday afternoon. He has no legal standing.”
