Chapter 14: The Statement

The interrogation room inside the precinct was small, functional, and lit by a harsh overhead fluorescent panel that hummed a low, continuous note. But to Grace and Leo, it felt like the safest place on earth. The heavy oak table separated them from two federal investigators—a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored navy suit named Agent Miller, and a senior detective who had spent the last two hours reviewing the digital data dump Leo provided.
Grace sat comfortably in a padded metal chair, holding a paper cup of warm black coffee between her hands. The newborn slept peacefully in its portable carrier resting on a sturdy chair beside them, cocooned safely in the blue blanket. Leo sat beside her, his hand resting reassuringly over hers on the cold metal table.
Agent Miller closed the digital tablet displaying the decrypted communication logs between Sarah, Martha, and Doctor Evans. She looked up, her expression a mix of professional gravity and profound sympathy.
“The timestamps, the pharmacy cross-references, and the audio memos you downloaded from the cloud server are airtight,” Agent Miller said, leaning forward. “We have enough probable cause to issue immediate warrants for search, seizure, and detainment for both Martha Vance and Doctor Evans. This isn't just a domestic dispute, Mr. Vance. This is an orchestrated conspiracy to manufacture legal incompetency for financial gain.”
Grace let out a long breath she felt like she had been holding for nine months. The suffocating weight that had pressed down on her chest since the first days of her pregnancy finally evaporated. She looked at Leo, a small, genuine smile touching the corners of her lips.
“What happens next?” Leo asked, his voice steady.

“We execute the warrants this morning,” Agent Miller replied, standing up and extending a hand toward Leo, which he firmly shook. “You both need to remain under protective supervision while our team secures the estate and brings the suspects in for questioning. You won’t have to step foot in that house alone again.”
As Agent Miller left the room to coordinate the tactical team, the first rays of morning sunlight broke through the high barred window of the precinct, casting a warm, golden beam across the center of the metal table. The nightmare engineered in the luxury bedroom was over. The truth was out in the open, where no amount of manipulation could ever bury it again.
