Chapter 1: The Wooden Scepter

The morning sunlight sliced sharply through the pristine white curtains of the suburban living room, illuminating floating motes of dust and the stark reality of domestic panic. Clara Vance stood chest-heaving, her vibrant red hair catching the light like a halo of coiled copper. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy, polished wooden rolling pin, its smooth maple grain darkened by years of kitchen service and, apparently, sudden bouts of visceral fury. Her crisp white button-down shirt was stark against her black pencil skirt, creating an image of corporate neatness violently juxtaposed with maternal rage.
"Ungrateful brat!" Clara screamed, her voice tearing through the architectural calm of the designer home.
Across the spacious room, Julian Vance burst through the mahogany double doors, his tailored dark suit twisting awkwardly as he threw himself over the back of the plush gray sofa. His panic was raw, stripped of any paternal dignity. He shielded his head instinctively, his eyes darting wildly across the room to assess the threat.
In the corner, ten-year-old Leo sat frozen on an ottoman, his eyes wide with a terror that felt entirely too practiced for a routine household argument. He instinctively clutched his left forearm, lifting it slightly to reveal a jagged, angry red scratch mark stretching across pale skin. It looked fresh, raw, and completely disproportionate to any normal childhood mishap.
Beside him, eight-year-old Maya curled into a tight ball, whimpering softly into her knees. Julian scrambled across the hardwood floor, abandoning his suit jacket on an accent chair as he rushed to pull his daughter into a desperate, protective embrace. His breathing came in ragged, shallow gasps. He stared over Maya’s trembling shoulders, his eyes locked onto Clara with a look of absolute, soul-crushing horror.
Clara lowered the rolling pin an inch, her chest still heaving, the wild fire in her green eyes beginning to cool into a chilling, calculated emptiness. The sudden silence that fell over the room was heavier than any shouting. Julian tightened his grip on Maya, his knuckles turning white as he stared intently at his wife, his breath hitching in his throat.

In a breathless whisper that barely carried across the quiet room, Julian muttered the words that exposed a horrifying domestic reality.
"Not the first time."
