Chapter 10: The Midnight Knock

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed a stark 2:14 AM. The house was shrouded in absolute darkness, save for the faint sliver of amber light filtering through the hallway from the kitchen nightlight. Martha lay awake in her bed, her mind racing through the labyrinth of legal motions, bank statements, and the devastating reality of her daughter’s betrayal. Beside her in the guest room, Noah had finally drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep, clutching his blue backpack like a security blanket.

Suddenly, a sharp, insistent pounding echoed from the front porch.

Martha sat up instantly, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. In a small town at two in the morning, unexpected visitors were never bearers of good news. She threw on her flannel bathrobe, her bare feet padding silently across the hardwood hallway floor.

The pounding came again—louder this time, accompanied by the muffled rattle of the brass door handle.

Martha approached the front door, switching on the porch light. Through the frosted glass panel, she saw the unmistakable silhouette of a tall figure swaying unsteadily, accompanied by the flashing red-and-blue lights of a parked cruiser in her driveway.

She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open. Standing on the porch was Mark, disheveled, reeking of cheap whiskey, his eyes bloodshot and wide with panic. Behind him stood a local police officer, hand resting casually on his holster.

""Martha! Thank God,"" Mark slurred, stepping forward uninvited, his expensive travel jacket wrinkled and stained with travel grime. ""We got your messages, we saw the bank alerts... Sarah is hysterical at a motel four towns over. We came back for our boy.""

Martha planted her feet firmly in the doorway, blocking his entry with the absolute authority of a fortress wall. Her face was carved from granite.

""You don't have a boy anymore, Mark,"" Martha said, her voice cutting through the night air like a razor blade. ""The court granted me emergency custody ten hours ago. And if you take one step closer to this door, I will have this officer arrest you for child abandonment and trespassing.""

Mark staggered back, his jaw dropping in alcoholic disbelief. ""You can't do that! He's *our* son!""

""You forfeited every right to call him that the moment you left him crying against a terminal window,"" Martha replied coldly, her hand gripping the edge of the door. She looked past Mark to the police officer. ""Officer, remove this man from my property before I exercise my legal right to defend my home.""
