Chapter 10 - The Party That Turned Into a Nightmare

Friday evening arrived beneath a cold spring rain.

Bellavita glowed against the dark Boston streets.

Inside, expensive floral arrangements decorated the private dining room.

Waiters moved between elegantly dressed guests.

Champagne sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers.

And Graham Price stood near a stage, smiling like a man who had just conquered the world.

The private reception was proceeding under a separate payment arrangement after Sofia refused to charge my Founder's Reserve account.

Graham apparently believed the temporary inconvenience was meaningless.

He still expected his investors to celebrate the supposed acquisition.

He had no idea that Eleanor had already secured protective legal measures challenging the forged authorization and preventing the proposed property transfer while the dispute was examined.

Nor did he know that our accountants were preserving evidence of the suspicious payments.

At seven fifteen, I entered Bellavita through the main entrance.

I wore my navy-blue suit.

My silver-gray hair was carefully styled.

Henry's pearl brooch gleamed beneath the lights.

Eleanor walked beside me.

Sofia was waiting at the reception desk.

“Good evening, Mrs. Whitmore.”

“Good evening, Sofia.”

She looked nervous.

“Mr. Price has already begun his presentation.”

“Then we'd better not miss it.”

We entered the private dining room.

Graham stood beneath an enormous projection screen.

He was discussing renovation plans and the future of Bellavita.

Adam stood beside him.

Vanessa sat at the front table, smiling proudly.

Then Graham raised his champagne glass.

“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks a new chapter in Boston hospitality!”

Applause filled the room.

I continued walking.

Graham noticed me.

For one brief second, his smile faltered.

Then he recovered.

“Margaret! What an unexpected pleasure.”

The room grew quieter.

I stopped near the stage.

“Good evening, Graham.”

He glanced toward Eleanor.

“What brings you here?”

I looked around the room.

“I understand you're celebrating the acquisition of a restaurant.”

He gave a strained laugh.

“That's correct.”

“How exciting.”

Several guests exchanged confused glances.

I continued.

“Would you mind telling everyone who sold it to you?”

Graham's smile vanished.

“Margaret, this isn't the time.”

“Actually, I think it's the perfect time.”

Vanessa stood.

“Margaret, you're making a fool of yourself!”

I turned toward her.

“Sit down, Vanessa.”

Something in my voice stopped her.

I faced the room.

“My name is Margaret Whitmore. My late husband and I built Bellavita, and I remain the controlling owner of this business.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

I continued.

“I have not authorized its sale.”

The room went completely silent.

Graham stepped forward.

“That's absurd. We have signed documents.”

“Then produce them.”

His expression hardened.

He reached into his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“I anticipated this.”

He raised a document.

“Here is the owner's written consent.”

Eleanor stepped beside me.

“That signature is disputed, and the proposed transaction has been formally challenged.”

Graham ignored her.

He looked toward the guests.

“Mrs. Whitmore has been experiencing difficulties with her memory. Her son has been handling these matters for her.”

A few investors whispered.

I felt my anger rising.

Even after the emergency guardianship request had been denied, Graham was still repeating the same cruel accusation.

I stepped closer.

“Graham, I'm going to give you one opportunity to stop lying.”

His eyes narrowed.

Then he turned toward Adam.

“Adam, come here.”

My son hesitated.

Graham held up the disputed document.

“Tell these people your mother authorized this transaction.”

Adam stared at the paper.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

“Say it,” she whispered.

Graham's voice sharpened.

“Adam, tell them the signature is genuine.”

Every face in the room turned toward my son.

I stood motionless.

My heart pounded.

Because I knew that whatever Adam said next would change our relationship forever.

Then Graham asked the question that brought the entire room to a standstill.

“Adam, are you willing to swear that you personally watched your mother sign this document?”

Adam looked at Graham.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

Finally, he looked at me.

And I saw tears forming in my son's eyes.
