Chapter 5

Two weeks had passed since the incident in the living room. The house was now completely empty, stripped of furniture, rugs, and personal items. Echoes bounced off the hardwood floors where Clara had fallen. Maya stood in the center of the barren living room, holding a cardboard box filled with kitchenware she had accidentally left behind months ago. David was outside, loading his truck with the last of his belongings.
Clara walked in through the front door, holding a clipboard with final inspection documents. She looked around the cavernous space with a detached curiosity. The bright modern home that had once symbolized their shared American dream now looked like a stage set after the final curtain call.
"The buyers signed off," Clara said, her voice echoing slightly in the empty room. "Escrow closes on Friday."
Maya lowered the box to the floor and straightened up. "Good. Fast and clean. Just like you wanted."
Clara walked over, stopping a few feet away from Maya. The animosity that had fueled their confrontation weeks ago was entirely gone, replaced by a fragile, hard-earned mutual respect. "I wanted to thank you, Maya," Clara said quietly.
Maya raised an eyebrow in genuine surprise. "For what? For blowing up your life?"
"For forcing me to see the truth," Clara replied. "I was miserable in this marriage. I was staying out of habit, out of fear of failure, out of stubbornness. You shattered the illusion, and even though it hurt, it was the only way I was ever going to wake up."
Maya looked down at her black leggings and maroon sweater, the same outfit she had worn that fateful day, deliberately chosen for comfort while packing. "It cost us everything we thought we had."
"We didn't have anything real, Maya. We had a performance." Clara offered a small, melancholic smile. "Are you going to stay in the city?"
"For now. I got a transfer at work. A fresh start in a different department." Maya picked up her box again. "And you?"
"Traveling. Visiting my sister in Seattle for a few months. Then figure it out one day at a time."

David walked back inside, wiping sweat from his forehead. He stopped when he saw the two women talking amicably. The tension in his shoulders relaxed slightly. "Everything loaded," he announced.
Maya nodded, heading toward the front door. She paused on the threshold, looking back at the two people who had defined her world for so long. "Goodbye, Clara. Goodbye, David." She stepped out into the bright afternoon sun, leaving the empty house behind for good.
