Chapter 9: The Defense Crumbles

The cross-examination by Helen’s defense attorney is aggressive, sharp, and designed to rattle Clara’s composure. The lawyer paces back and forth along the jury box, his voice dripping with calculated skepticism.

"Mrs. Vance, isn't it true that you had full access to your own personal accounts during this entire eighteen-month period?" the attorney asks, stepping closer to the witness stand and pointing a finger for dramatic effect.

Clara does not flinch. She meets his gaze with absolute calm. "Access on paper, yes. But whenever I attempted to make independent purchases or question the fund reallocations, my husband was immediately pressured by the defendant to intervene, and my daily life at home became unlivable. I was isolated in my own house."

"And yet, you never once filed a police report during this eighteen-month window, did you?" the attorney presses, raising his voice slightly to command the room.

"When someone threatens to take your newborn child away using institutional power and family courts, you don't run to the police immediately—you protect your child first," Clara answers steadily, her voice echoing clearly through the microphone. "You try to survive until you can find a way out safely."

The attorney stumbles slightly over his next question, realizing his aggressive angle is backfiring in front of the judge and the few remaining observers. He tries to pivot, asking about Clara's previous employment history before marriage, attempting to paint her as financially inexperienced, but Judge Harrison sustains the prosecutor's relevance objection with a sharp rap of his pen.

"No further questions," the defense attorney snaps angrily, turning on his heel and marching back to the defense table to slump into his chair beside Helen.

Helen glares at her lawyer with undisguised contempt before turning her furious eyes back toward Clara as she steps down from the witness stand and returns to her seat beside David. David wraps a strong, protective arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. The defense has failed to dismantle Clara’s testimony; instead, they have only highlighted the calculated cruelty of Helen’s systematic control.

Judge Harrison reviews his notes for a long moment, the silence in the courtroom stretching taut like a plucked violin string.

"The court will adjourn for the day," Judge Harrison announces, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "Closing arguments and final sentencing considerations will commence tomorrow morning at nine o'clock sharp. Bail is denied pending the final judgment."

The gavel falls with a sharp, definitive crack. Helen stands up, her face pale with shock as two deputies immediately step forward to escort her back to holding. The illusion of her invincibility is completely shattered.
