Chapter 7

Stephen lunged forward toward Maya, his face contorted in an ugly mask of rage. “You watch your mouth, you disrespectful little brat!” he shouted, raising a hand in a threatening gesture that crossed every remaining boundary of parental restraint. In a fraction of a second, Clara moved with stunning speed, positioning herself squarely between Stephen and their daughter. She shoved Stephen backward with both hands, using all her strength to catch him completely off guard. He stumbled back against the wall, his eyes widening in shock as he stared at his wife, who stood blazing with a fierce, protective fire he had never witnessed before.

Maya’s hand instinctively dove into her hoodie pocket, her fingers wrapping around her smartphone. With practiced speed, she unlocked the screen and pressed the pre-programmed emergency speed dial she had set up the previous night. The call connected instantly, the faint dial tone clicking over to an active dispatch line. “Don't you dare touch her,” Clara warned, her voice vibrating with restrained fury. “If you take one more step toward either of my children, I will let Maya finish this call, and you will spend tonight in a holding cell answering to a judge.” Stephen froze, breathing heavily as he stared at Clara’s unwavering stance. The raw, terrifying reality of his actions finally began to penetrate his thick armor of denial.

The ambient noise of the dispatcher’s voice bled faintly from Maya’s phone speaker—a tinny, mechanical inquiry asking for the location of the emergency. Maya looked at Clara, waiting for the final command, her thumb hovering over the speakerphone toggle. The entire household held its collective breath. Stephen looked at his daughter, then at his wife, seeing absolute, unyielding resolve reflected in their eyes. The volcanic anger that had fueled his outbursts for months suddenly turned to ash. He lowered his raised hand slowly, his shoulders collapsing as the weight of his total defeat settled over him.

Clara held her breath for a beat longer, assessing the shift in Stephen’s posture. She knew calling the police would start an irreversible legal firestorm, but she also knew it was the only leverage left to force real change. She gently placed her hand over the top of Maya’s phone, pressing down slightly to pause the connection. “Not yet, Maya,” Clara instructed softly, never taking her eyes off Stephen. She turned back to her husband, her voice chillingly clinical. “You have twenty-four hours to pack your own bags and check into a hotel. If you are still in this house tomorrow afternoon, I won't stop her from making that call.” Without another word, Stephen turned and walked out of the room, his head bowed in absolute defeat.
