Chapter 12: Cornered in the Sub-Basement

Marcus stepped half a step forward, his posture rigid and protective. “Back off, Eleanor. This is kidnapping, and you’re standing on federal property obstructing a protected patient.”

Eleanor let out a cold, humorless laugh that sounded like shards of glass sliding across marble. “Spare me the legal theatrics, Doctor. You surrendered any claim to professional authority the moment you ripped off your ID badge and aided a patient in fleeing custody. You are an unlicensable fugitive as of ten minutes ago. The hospital has already filed formal charges of theft of medical property and patient abduction against both of you.”

Clara stepped out from behind Marcus, her eyes blazing with a fierce, terrifying intensity that momentarily gave Eleanor pause. The pain in her abdomen was a white-hot fire, but maternal adrenaline eclipsed every physical limitation her body possessed.

“You can file whatever charges you want,” Clara said, her voice steady and resolute, echoing off the damp concrete. “You can buy judges, you can bribe administrators, and you can forge signatures until your hands cramp. But you will never, ever touch my son.”

Eleanor’s smile vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. She gestured slightly with two fingers toward the security guards. “Take the child. Wrap him in the blanket, put him in the car, and remove this hysterical girl from the premises. Use whatever physical force is necessary.”

The two guards advanced in unison, their heavy footsteps echoing like thunder in the enclosed space. Clara stepped back instinctively, her heel catching on a stray rubber drainage hose, sending her stumbling against a stack of cardboard medical supply boxes. Marcus lunged forward, throwing his fists up to intercept the first guard, but the sheer size advantage was overwhelming. The guard caught Marcus under the ribs with a brutal, practiced jab that knocked the wind out of the young doctor, sending him crashing hard against the concrete floor.

“Marcus!” Clara screamed, horror spiking through her veins as she scrambled to her feet, shielding the baby with her entire body.

The second guard reached out a heavy, calloused hand, his fingers clawing toward the edge of the baby carrier strapped across Clara’s chest. Clara let out a feral snarl, bringing her elbow down hard against the man’s forearm with every ounce of strength she had left.

Before the guard could retaliate, the screech of squealing tires echoed down the loading ramp. A battered, rust-streaked pickup truck tore around the corner, its high-beam headlights blindingly bright, flooding the sub-basement with halogen fury.
