Chapter 13: The Return to the Estate

The unmarked police cruiser turned down the familiar oak-lined driveway of the Hayes estate just before noon. Two additional county squad cars flanked them on either side, their blue and red emergency lights flashing silently against the midday sun, painting the manicured lawn in an eerie, pulsing strobe effect.

Toby and Leo sat in the back seat of Miller’s car. Leo clutched the fabric of his dark blue hoodie so tightly his knuckles were stark white, his eyes fixed on the front door of the house where their nightmare had begun.

"Stay in the car," Miller instructed firmly, resting his hand on the door handle. "Both of you. Don't open these doors for anyone until I come back for you."

"Be careful, Detective," Toby said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering in his chest.

Miller nodded grimly, stepping out into the crisp air and drawing his service weapon as he approached the front porch. The other officers fanned out around the perimeter of the house, securing the back patio and the side windows to ensure there was no escape route left open.

Miller didn't bother knocking. He raised his foot and kicked the heavy oak front door squarely in the center. The deadbolt splintered, and the door swung open with a resounding crash.

Inside, the house was eerily quiet. The lemon polish scent hung heavy in the air, masking a faint, metallic odor that drifted up from the basement stairs. Miller advanced down the hallway with his weapon drawn, clearing the living room, the kitchen, and finally Margaret’s home office.

The office was meticulously organized, just as it always was. But behind the mahogany desk sat Margaret Hayes, perfectly composed, wearing her crisp white button-down shirt and beige pencil skirt. Her blonde hair was pinned back into its immaculate bun. She wasn't holding a phone, nor was she packing a bag. She was simply sitting there, staring calmly at the empty doorway as if she had been expecting them for hours.

"You're a bit late, Thomas," Margaret said, her voice entirely devoid of panic or surprise. "I expected you at ten."

"Margaret Hayes, you are under arrest for the embezzlement of firm funds, corporate fraud, and the unlawful abduction and disappearance of Arthur Hayes," Miller said, reading her rights in a cold, professional tone as he stepped forward and slapped steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Margaret didn't resist. She stood up smoothly, her posture remaining rigid and unbroken even as the metal cuffs clicked into place. As Miller led her out through the shattered front door toward the waiting squad car, she caught sight of Toby and Leo sitting in the back of Miller's vehicle through the rear window.

Her cold, calculating eyes locked onto Leo’s terrified face for one lingering second. She didn't smile, nor did she frown. She simply looked at him with the chilling detachment of a stranger, before sliding into the back of the cruiser as the doors slammed shut.
