Chapter 14

The morning sun broke over the city skyline, casting a warm, golden glow across the wet pavement of the quiet residential street where they emerged from the underground utility tunnel. The storm had passed, leaving behind a washed, pristine world that looked entirely normal—as if the horrors of the past twenty-four hours had happened in another dimension entirely.
Rachel climbed out of the storm drain first, pulling Toby up into her arms and holding him tight against her chest. Her neutral sweater was stained with dirt and soot, her red hair tied back in a messy knot, but her posture was upright, steady, and unyielding.
Daniel climbed out right behind them, coughing slightly as he brushed the concrete dust from his dark shirt and trousers. He looked down the empty street, his eyes sharp and alert, before pulling the dead smartphone from his pocket and tossing it into a nearby public trash can with a quiet sense of finality.
Within minutes of their surfacing, the distant wail of approaching sirens echoed down the avenue—not the silent, lethal sirens of corporate assassins, but the flashing red-and-blue lights of federal marshals and state police cruisers converging on the location according to the encrypted coordinates Agent Miller had transmitted before the bunker fell.
Three black SUVs pulled up alongside the curb in a synchronized stop. The doors flew open, and federal agents in standard windbreakers stepped out, led by a sharp-eyed woman with a badge displayed clearly on her lapel.
“Are you Daniel Vance and Rachel Hayes?” the lead agent asked, stepping forward with an investigative tablet in hand.
“We are,” Daniel said, stepping forward to shield Rachel and Toby slightly. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the small metal flash drive, holding it out flat on his open palm. “The master encryption files, the compliance logs, and Vance’s personal confessions are fully downloaded and verified on the DOJ secure server. The corruption goes up to the executive board.”
The agent took the drive, glancing down at it before signaling her team. Two medics immediately rushed forward with thermal blankets and medical kits, kneeling down beside Toby and Rachel.
“You’re safe now,” the agent said firmly, looking directly into Rachel’s eyes. “Federal protection has been activated across the entire district. The executive board members were detained at their homes thirty minutes ago.”
Rachel closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a lifetime of fear. She wrapped the warm thermal blanket around Toby’s shoulders as the boy leaned against her, finally letting his guard down completely and resting his head against her collarbone.

Daniel stood beside them, looking out at the rising sun as it burned away the last lingering shadows of the night. The nightmare was over, and the truth had finally seen the light of day.
