Chapter 4

The executive boardroom of Vance Enterprises smelled of aged leather, expensive cigars, and suppressed panic. Julian sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his face pale and drawn, dark circles shadowing his eyes. The morning stock reports showed a sudden, unexplained dip in investor confidence following whispers of the wedding scandal leaking onto financial forums. Across the table sat his father, Arthur Vance, a formidable patriarch whose iron grip on the company had never faced such a public threat. Arthur did not raise his voice; his anger was far more dangerous in its quiet, deliberate intensity. He demanded to know how an obscure financial analyst Elena had managed to bypass their security perimeter and detonate a social bomb on live television without their corporate intelligence division seeing it coming.

Julian stammered an excuse, attempting to downplay Elena’s significance in his life, claiming she was merely a brief chapter he had successfully closed months prior. Arthur slammed a heavy silver pen onto the polished wood, silencing his son instantly. He pointed out that corporate stability relied entirely on optics, predictability, and absolute control. By leaving a trail of unaddressed paternity claims and broken promises, Julian had handed their fiercest competitors a weapon they could use during the upcoming quarter’s municipal rezoning votes. Arthur instructed Marcus Vance, who sat quietly near the end of the table, to utilize every available resource to discredit Elena before Sarah Chen’s investigative piece went to print.

As the meeting adjourned, Julian retreated to his private office, pouring himself a generous measure of single-malt scotch. His hands shook slightly as he lifted the heavy crystal glass. The image of Elena standing triumphantly on that stage, holding his infant daughter high in the air, haunted his every waking moment. It was not merely the humiliation that stung; it was the realization that Elena possessed a quiet strength he had consistently underestimated during their two-year relationship. He had viewed her as an agreeable, quiet background figure who would quietly accept a severance package and fade into obscurity. Instead, she had orchestrated a masterclass in public exposure. Julian opened his desk drawer, pulling out an old photograph of himself and Elena smiling in a Tuscan vineyard, a reminder of a time before ambition and greed completely eroded his moral compass.
