Chapter 1: The Ash and the Echo

The cold concrete of the garage floor bit through Clara’s green sweatshirt as she scrambled backward, her hands instantly flying to protect the heavy swell of her abdomen. Above her stood Julian, his light brown hair damp with sweat, his dark shirt clinging to his frame. Just moments before, the glowing tip of his cigarette had hovered dangerously close to her skin, accompanied by his venomous threat to burn the child right out of her. Clara’s breath came in ragged, terrified gasps, her eyes darting between Julian and his mother, Martha, who stood nearby in a beige shirt, watching the cruelty unfold with a chilling, vacant smile. Clara clutched her belly tighter, her voice trembling as she offered the only bargaining chip she had left.
“Take the money!” Clara cried out, her throat raw with panic. “Spare my baby!”
Julian let out a harsh, mocking laugh, the ash from his cigarette falling onto the dusty floor. He didn't care about the cash hidden upstairs in the bedroom drawer; he cared about control, about erasing the future that Clara represented. Just beyond the threshold, peering through the half-open white door, stood Thomas. His blue shirt was slightly rumpled, and his face was tight with agonizing anxiety. Thomas had arrived to help, but hesitation had pinned him in place, turning him into a helpless spectator to a nightmare.
Julian dropped his cigarette, grinding it beneath his heel before his gaze shifted toward a heavy metal pipe resting against a workbench. With a swift, aggressive motion, he snatched the cold steel from the ground, lifting it high above his head with both hands. His knuckles turned white, and his jaw clenched as he stared down at the defenseless woman shivering at his feet.
“Finish her!” Martha commanded from the corner, her voice steady and devoid of maternal warmth.

Julian tightened his grip on the metal rod, preparing to bring it down. But before the blow could land, a heavy thud echoed from the front of the house. Thomas, unable to watch any longer, slammed his shoulder against the side door, shattering the flimsy latch. The sudden intrusion broke the tense rhythm of the garage, forcing Julian to pivot away from Clara. In the chaotic seconds of distraction, Clara dragged herself toward a stack of old tires, tucking her body into the shadows. Thomas stepped fully into the dim light of the garage, his chest heaving, his eyes locked on Julian. The air grew thick with unspoken retribution as the confrontation shifted from a helpless assault to a dangerous standoff.
