Chapter 12: A Visitor from the Past

The autumn leaves had begun to turn russet and gold, carpeting the winding drive of the Sterling estate in a rustling blanket of color. Clara was reviewing digital compliance reports in the library when Marcus entered quietly, pausing a respectful distance from the mahogany desk.
"Miss Sterling, you have a visitor in the receiving parlor," Marcus said, his tone carrying a subtle note of caution. "A woman. She insists she has information regarding the remaining assets associated with Julian Vance’s secondary shell corporations."
Clara looked up from her screen, raising an eyebrow. "Did she identify herself?"
"She gave the name Elena Vance," Marcus replied. "She requested a private conversation before the federal trustees complete the final liquidation of Julian’s estate."
Clara closed her laptop lid and stood up, smoothing the fabric of her wool skirt. She had assumed Elena was safely settled in the Midwest under her new identity, far away from the wreckage of her past life. For Elena to travel all the way to the Maine estate suggested that something significant had gone wrong—or that she had held back critical information during her initial debriefing.
"Bring her to the conservatory, Marcus. The natural light will be better for a conversation of this nature," Clara instructed calmly.
A few minutes later, Clara walked into the glass-enclosed conservatory filled with tall palms and blooming orchids. Elena sat on a wrought-iron bench, looking markedly different from the terrified woman in the silk evening dress on the penthouse couch. She wore a simple dark trench coat, her hair tied back simply, and her hands were clasped tightly in her lap. When Clara entered, Elena stood up quickly, her eyes reflecting a mixture of anxiety and lingering shame.
"Clara," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Thank you for seeing me. I know I have no right to be here after everything that happened."
"Sit down, Elena," Clara said gently, gesturing to the bench. "If you are here, it means you broke your relocation protocols. That suggests the information you carry is important enough to risk your new life."

Elena swallowed hard, taking a seat and pulling a small, encrypted flash drive from the deep pocket of her coat. She placed it carefully on the glass table between them. "Julian lied to the federal trustees about his offshore holdings. He hid a secondary portfolio in Zurich—assets he intended to access if his primary corporate network ever collapsed. I found the access codes in his private safe before the raid, but I was too afraid to hand them over during the initial debriefing."
