Chapter 6: Behind Closed Doors

In the stifling quiet of Judge Thomas’s chambers, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The wood-paneled walls were lined heavy with law books and framed diplomas, offering no comfort to the grim drama unfolding within. Seated around the mahogany conference table were Judge Thomas, Sarah, Maya, and a court-appointed child advocate named Marcus Vance—no relation to David. David himself was absent, currently being held in a secure holding room downstairs while local law enforcement verified the coordinates retrieved from Maya’s phone.
Marcus slid a printed transcript across the table toward the judge. His expression was grim, his graying hair and tired eyes speaking of a career spent wading through the worst of human behavior.
“We ran a preliminary ping on the coordinates, Your Honor,” Marcus reported, his voice low and steady. “The address belongs to a remote hunting cabin registered under a shell corporation linked to David Vance’s business accounts. Local sheriff deputies were dispatched twenty minutes ago. They found clear evidence of long-term habitation. More importantly, they found passports, cash reserves, and airline tickets to a non-extradition country booked for flights departing tomorrow morning.”
Sarah gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. The blood rushed violently in her ears. She looked down at Maya, who was quietly coloring with a green crayon on a legal pad provided by the clerk, seemingly unfazed by the monumental danger she had just pulled her mother out of. David wasn't just fighting for custody; he was planning to abduct Maya and vanish across international borders, using the custody battle as a smokescreen to distract from his true intentions.
Judge Thomas removed her glasses, pinching the bridge of her nose in deep exhaustion. She looked at Sarah with profound sympathy. “You had no idea?”

“None,” Sarah whispered, tears spilling over her lashes again, though these were fueled by a mixture of horror and profound gratitude. “He always traveled for his ‘consulting firm.’ He told me the trips were mandatory for his partnership. I trusted him. Even when we separated, I thought he was just a bitter, controlling man. I never imagined... I never imagined he would steal my child.”
“Parents like David Vance operate on absolute control,” Judge Thomas said grimly, sliding the documents back into a neat pile. “They view their children not as human beings with independent rights, but as extensions of their own ego, property to be weaponized or reclaimed when they feel their dominance slipping.”
