Chapter 3: The Father's Wrath

Mark’s knees hit the warm concrete hard, but he felt no pain, his entire consciousness consumed by the sight of Lily weeping uncontrollably beside him. He hovered over her trembling body like a protective shield, his large hands trembling slightly as he hovered inches above her injured arm, terrified that even a gentle touch might worsen the damage. Lily buried her face against his white t-shirt, soaking the fabric with hot, desperate tears, her tiny fingers clutching his back with her left hand while her right arm hung uselessly, horribly crooked.

""What did you do to her?!"" Mark’s voice cracked, ripping through the tense backyard atmosphere with a raw, vibrating fury that made several nearby guests flinch and step back. He did not look up, his eyes locked onto the grotesque swelling of his daughter's wrist, but his presence radiated an intimidating, dangerous heat. The sheer disbelief in his tone carried an accusation so heavy that it seemed to lower the temperature of the sunny afternoon by several degrees.

Elena pushed her way through the murmuring crowd just behind Mark, her face pale beneath her golden-brown summer tan. Her designer sunglasses were pushed up onto her forehead, revealing wide, horrified eyes. She dropped to one knee opposite Mark, her hands hovering helplessly near Lily’s uninjured shoulder. ""Oh god, Lily, sweetie, look at me,"" Elena pleaded, her voice shaking violently. She glanced up at the gathering crowd, her gaze sweeping over the neighborhood friends and family members who had frozen in various states of shock. ""Did anyone see this? What happened here?""

Silence answered her, save for Lily’s heart-wrenching sobs. The adults exchanged uncomfortable, shifting glances. Several people who had been standing mere feet away suddenly found the patterns on the patio tiles or the distant treetops exceptionally fascinating. Nobody wanted to get involved in a family dispute, and nobody wanted to point an accusing finger at a child, especially not at Leo, whose mother—Mark’s sister-in-law—was known for creating dramatic neighborhood feuds over the slightest perceived slight. The collective cowardice hung thick in the air, a tacit conspiracy of silence that shielded the guilty party behind a wall of averted gazes and muttered sympathies.

Mark’s jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in his cheek twitched visibly. The lack of immediate answers from the surrounding adults only fueled his mounting rage. He gently eased Lily’s left arm around his neck, preparing to lift her and rush her to the car for an emergency room visit. But before he could stand, a sharp chime cut through the air—a notification sound echoing from the patio table where Elena’s leather handbag lay open beside a half-empty pitcher of lemonade.
