Chapter 11: The Race Against the Clock

Julian didn't wait for a second invitation. He clutched the heavy leather ledger under his arm, turned on his heel, and sprinted back through the sub-basement stairs, navigating the dark utility tunnel with the frantic energy of a man running for his very soul. The rain had slowed to a steady drizzle when he burst out from beneath the blackberry bushes and threw himself into the driver’s seat of his battered sedan.

He cranked the ignition. The engine sputtered twice before catching with a loud, protesting roar. Julian threw the gear shift into reverse, spraying gravel across the wet asphalt as he tore down the private estate road and sped back toward Mercy General Hospital.

His mind was a whirlwind of terrifying possibilities. Had Arthur’s legal team already enforced the emergency custody injunction? Had Dr. Vance been able to hold them off? He glanced at the passenger seat where the black ledger sat like a ticking bomb. It contained everything—the proof of systemic corruption, fabricated medical records, and the legal documents proving Arthur’s unlawful seizure of Julian’s parental rights years ago. But paperwork didn't matter if he didn't reach Toby before the hospital administration executed the court order.

The digital dashboard clock glared back at him: 3:42 AM.

Julian pushed the sedan past sixty miles per hour on the slick, winding coastal highway, his tires cutting through standing puddles with a violent hiss. The scratch on his cheek burned from the sweat and adrenaline, but he felt a strange, terrifying clarity settling into his bones. For ten years, he had lived as a ghost, hiding in the shadows, letting his father define his existence through absence and fear. Tonight, that ended. He was no longer running from the St. Clair name; he was weaponizing it to protect the only person in the world who truly mattered.

As the concrete monolith of Mercy General finally loomed into view, illuminated by the harsh white glow of the emergency entrance canopy, Julian saw something that made his heart skip a beat. Two sleek, black executive town cars were parked illegally in the ambulance bay, their hazard lights blinking rhythmically against the wet pavement. Arthur’s legal team had arrived. And they were already inside.
