Chapter 3

The rhythmic ringing of the emergency line echoed hollowly in the otherwise silent living room, amplifying the oppressive tension hanging between Leo and Eleanor. Leo’s chest heaved beneath his damp white collared shirt, the black suspenders digging painfully into his shoulders as he gripped the newborn baby tighter against his chest. The infant stirred softly in the blue blanket, letting out a tiny, whimpering sigh that tore at Leo’s fraying nerves. Across the room, Eleanor stood near the minimalist dining table with her arms crossed, her expression a mask of chilly indifference. She refused to acknowledge the gravity of the situation, treating the unfolding crisis as a minor domestic inconvenience.
"911, what is your emergency?" a calm, professional voice finally cut through the silence.
"My wife—she’s unresponsive," Leo said, his voice cracking slightly before he forced himself to steady it. "We need an ambulance immediately at 4142 Oakridge Terrace. She’s twenty-three, pregnant—well, she just gave birth ten days ago—and she won't wake up. Her skin is ice cold."
"Sir, stay calm. Is she breathing?" the dispatcher instructed smoothly, guiding Leo through the protocol while gathering the necessary data.
"Yes, she’s breathing, but it’s shallow. Very shallow," Leo replied, casting a desperate glance down at Claire. Her long brown hair still framed her pale, motionless face against the neutral-toned sofa cushions. He knelt beside her once more, careful not to jostle the infant cradled securely in his arm. He reached out with his free hand, pressing two fingers gently against Claire’s wrist, searching for a steady pulse. It was faint, much too faint, sending a fresh wave of cold panic rushing through his veins.
In the background, Eleanor scoffed softly, a sound designed to convey maximum disdain. She strolled toward the coffee table, deliberately picking up the medical warning document that had been sitting there unread for days. "Melodrama at its finest," Eleanor muttered under her breath, loud enough for Leo to hear. "Calling emergency services over a nap. You're enabling her weakness, Leo. If you coddle her like this, she will never respect your authority as the head of the household."

Leo looked up from the floor, his eyes blazing with a fury that frightened even himself. The sheer audacity of her words, spoken while her own daughter lay incapacitated a few feet away, broke something inside him. He pressed the phone tighter to his ear, ensuring the dispatcher could hear every word exchanged in the room. "An ambulance is on the way, sir. Keep your focus on your wife," the dispatcher’s voice instructed firmly through the speaker.
"Listen to me, Eleanor," Leo said, his voice dropping to a low, menacing register that commanded silence. "If anything happens to Claire, your traditional methods won't protect you from what I am going to expose. I have the messages, I have the financial records, and I have the logs of every single hour you forced her to stand at that stove while she was collapsing from exhaustion. You thought you were controlling our home, but you just signed your own warrant."
