Chapter 1

The morning light cut through the cheap blinds of the suburban bedroom, illuminating swirling dust motes and casting harsh shadows across the wrinkled grey duvet cover. Eleanor stood aggressively at the foot of the white wooden bed, her blonde hair pulled back in a severe updo that seemed to stretch the skin around her eyes tight. She clutched the lapels of her faded pink silk robe with white-knuckled intensity, her chest heaving as she pointed a manicured, trembling finger straight into Clara’s face.
“Get your lazy ass up and make breakfast!” Eleanor shrieked, spittle catching the slant of sunlight. “This is my damn house, get out!”
Clara sat hunched beneath the heavy blankets, her brown hair falling in disarray around her shoulders, clad only in a light blue camisole top that felt entirely too exposed against the freezing hostility of the room. She held her hands up defensively, her palms facing outward as her chest rose and fell with shallow, angry breaths.
“You crazy—stop making everything worse!” Clara shouted back, her voice cracking with a mixture of exhaustion and raw, suppressed fury.
Mark stood frozen in the open bedroom doorway, wearing a worn grey t-shirt and plaid pajama pants, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief. He took a hesitant half-step forward, his mouth opening to intervene, but the words caught in his throat as Eleanor surged closer.
Clara’s patience snapped like dry timber. She shoved Eleanor’s arm away with a violent, defensive sweep, her eyes blazing.
“Touch me again and both of you are done!” Clara roared, the finality in her tone freezing the air in the cramped space.
Eleanor lunged forward onto the mattress, her face twisting into an ugly snarl, while Mark finally rushed across the room, shouting hoarsely as he tried to pull them apart. The air filled with a chaotic cacophony of overlapping accusations and bitter history, the bedroom walls closing in on the three trapped souls.
Mark grabbed Eleanor’s silk-clad shoulders, dragging her backward just as her nails grazed Clara’s collarbone.
“Stop it, both of you, just stop!” Mark yelled, his face flushing a deep, mottled red.
Clara scrambled backward against the oak headboard, pulling the grey duvet up to her chin, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stared past Mark’s shoulder, her gaze locking onto the nightstand beside the lamp. There, half-hidden beneath a stack of unpaid electric bills, lay a manila folder with her full legal name written across the tab in bold, unfamiliar handwriting.
Eleanor wrenched herself free from Mark’s grip, panting heavily, a cold, knowing smirk suddenly replacing the rage on her face.

“Go ahead, Clara,” Eleanor whispered, her voice dropping to a venomous hiss that cut straight through the lingering echoes of the shouting. “Open the folder. See what your precious father left behind before he died.”
