Chapter 2: Silence in the Corridor

Outside the heavy oak door, the long hallway of the grand estate stretched in quiet perfection, lined with ancestral portraits and glowing under recessed golden sconces. Julian adjusted the cuffs of his pristine black tuxedo, his jaw tight as he hurried to catch up with his mother. The faint sound of Clara’s frantic plea had faded behind the thick wood, replaced in his ears by the imaginary applause of the elite business partners waiting downstairs. He told himself that Clara was prone to dramatics, that she would be fine for a couple of hours, and that the timing of the labor was simply an inconvenient disruption to a meticulously planned future.

Kayla walked with practiced grace, her silk blue dress whispering against the carpet. She did not slow her pace as Julian fell into step beside her. Her expression remained impassive, hardened by decades of protecting family assets and social prestige above all human emotion. She glanced sideways at her son, noting the slight tremor in his hands and the shadow of doubt clouding his eyes.

""Pull yourself together, Julian,"" Kayla murmured, her voice a low, chilling hiss that carried effortlessly in the empty corridor. ""The investors from the Vanguard Group are seated in the fourth row. If you look like you are walking to an execution instead of your own wedding, the stock value of the holding company will drop before we cut the cake.""

Julian swallowed hard, the taste of dry ash coating his tongue. A phantom memory of Clara’s tear-filled eyes flashed behind his eyelids, pricking his conscience. He slowed his stride by a fraction, staring back at the distant door of the bridal suite bathroom. ""Mother, maybe we should have called a doctor. She was bleeding. It didn't look like false labor.""

Kayla stopped walking and turned to face her son, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. She reached out, her manicured fingers digging sharply into the lapel of his tuxedo. ""A doctor arriving now would trigger a media circus. Rumors of a premature birth out of wedlock would destroy the merger with the Sinclair family. Clarissa knew the rules when she agreed to live under this roof. She is resourceful enough to manage. Now, fix your tie, put on a smile, and walk down that aisle like a man who controls his destiny. Do not let a peasant girl in labor ruin our empire.""

The harsh pragmatism in his mother’s words washed over Julian, numbing the last remnants of his moral resistance. He nodded slowly, allowing himself to be reeled back into the toxic orbit of family ambition. They turned the corner toward the grand staircase, leaving the isolated upper wing in profound, oppressive silence. Behind the locked bathroom door, Clara was utterly forgotten by the world outside, forced to draw upon an inner reserve of strength she never knew she possessed as the first true stage of delivery commenced.
