Chapter 3: The Digital Shield

The harsh glow of the smartphone screen illuminated Clara’s face in the dim afternoon light filtering through the lace curtains. She stood her ground near the sofa, her posture unyielding, her fierce expression holding Mark and Thomas at bay. Eleanor’s face twitched slightly for the first time, a micro-expression of genuine apprehension crossing her aging features as she realized the potential power of the small rectangular device in Clara’s hand.
"No one is to leave until the police arrive," Clara declared, her voice ringing with absolute finality.
Thomas scoffed, taking a dismissive step forward, though he kept his eyes locked on the glowing screen. "Don't be ridiculous, Clara. Calling the authorities over a domestic disciplinary matter will only bring a media circus to our doorstep. Put the phone away and let us handle this privately, like civilized adults."
"Civilized?" Clara laughed bitterly, the sound devoid of any humor. "For the past three years, you’ve treated this house like a prison camp. You forced me out, you kept my daughter hostage under the guise of shared custody, and now you’re treating her like an unpaid servant. I’ve tried playing by your rules, Mark. I tried being amicable for Lily's sake. But this ends today."
Mark’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. He took a threatening step toward her, his hand raised defensively. "You’re unhinged, Clara. You’re twisting reality to suit your unstable narrative. Give me that phone right now."
"Stay back, Mark," Clara warned, pointing the camera lens directly at him. "One step closer, and this live feed goes straight to the precinct and local news outlets. I have three years of voice memos, text messages, and now video evidence of your family's psychological and physical abuse."

Eleanor stepped between Mark and Clara, her voice dropping into a dangerous, persuasive register. "Clara, think of Lily. Do you want her dragged through a bitter public custody battle? Do you want her face plastered all over the news? We can settle this quietly. We can give you whatever financial settlement you want."
Clara stared at her former mother-in-law, feeling a profound wave of disgust. They still believed everything had a price tag, that human dignity and a child's safety could be negotiated away in a quiet study over cups of lukewarm tea. Lily whimpered again, clutching the hem of Clara’s jeans, anchoring her mother to the present moment. Clara’s resolve hardened further. She backed away toward the floral-patterned sofa, keeping the camera pointed squarely at the group while she prepared for the long, difficult battle ahead.
