Chapter 1: The Kitchen Floor

The cold shards of safety glass bit through the thin cotton of Emma’s purple hoodie, pressing sharp edges against her spine. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed stones, tearing at her throat as she fought for oxygen on the linoleum floor. Just inches away, the small plastic housing of her continuous glucose monitor blinked a sterile, accusing amber light. She tried to lift a hand, but her fingers refused to respond, feeling heavy and detached, like lead weights pinned to the kitchen tiles.
Standing above her, Sarah crossed her arms, her green blouse neatly tucked into beige trousers. Her expression remained closed, carved from years of exasperation and emotional exhaustion. For months, Emma had navigated a maze of unexplainable fatigue, erratic dizziness, and sudden collapses that the family doctor had repeatedly dismissed as teenage anxiety or dramatic attention-seeking. Sarah looked down at her daughter with a cold, guarded skepticism, conditioned by past false alarms and the heavy stress of managing household finances alone.
“Emma, stop pretending,” Sarah said, her voice cutting through the quiet hum of the refrigerator with a sharp, cynical edge.
From the shadows of the hallway doorway, ten-year-old Leo clutched the wooden frame with white-knuckled hands. Tears tracked silently down his flushed cheeks as he stared back and forth between his mother’s hardened stance and his sister’s pale, strained face. He was too young to understand medical terminology, but he knew the terrifying look of genuine distress when he saw it. His chest hitched with quiet, trembling sobs as he took a cautious half-step into the room, his eyes locked on Emma’s slackening jaw.
“Mom, her lips look blue,” Leo whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate fear that finally forced a flicker of doubt into the heavy kitchen air.

Before Sarah could process the warning, the front door swung open with a heavy thud, and hurried footsteps echoed across the hallway. Mark rushed into the kitchen, shedding his brown jacket as he took in the fractured glass and the terrifying stillness of his daughter’s posture. The air in the room shifted instantly from quiet skepticism to sudden, suffocating panic, setting off a desperate race against time that would forever alter the foundations of their family.
