Chapter 4: The Unwelcome Guest

Uncle Arthur pushed the double doors open fully, squinting against the pervasive darkness of the kitchen. His black-tie tuxedo was slightly rumpled, and a bead of sweat glistened on his forehead despite the cool night air. Behind him, a few other guests peered into the shadows, whispering nervously among themselves. Arthur stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Marcus standing in the middle of the room, flanked by the eerie green light emanating from the handheld screen.

“Marcus? What on earth is going on here?” Arthur demanded, trying to project an air of patriarchal authority that his trembling voice immediately undermined. “Where is the staff? Why are all the lights off? Beatrice is having a mild panic attack, and your security gates appear to be jammed shut. I demand you override whatever system error you’ve caused.”

Marcus didn't move. He stood completely still, the emerald light carving deep shadows into his face, giving him an almost predatory aura. He didn't offer a polite smile or a reassuring nod. Instead, he simply tilted the smartphone slightly, letting the green shield icon reflect off the lenses of Arthur’s expensive designer glasses.

“There is no system error, Arthur,” Marcus replied, his tone chillingly polite. “The estate is running exactly as programmed. All perimeter locks are engaged, and the local cellular towers have been jammed via our private micro-cell array. Nobody is leaving tonight until we have a civilized conversation about corporate governance.”

Arthur’s face drained of color, the ruddy complexion he usually maintained turning a sickly grey. He glanced past Marcus toward the sink, spotting Julian standing rigidly by the counter with her wet, red-stained hands tucked behind her back. A flicker of recognition and intense panic crossed Arthur’s eyes. He realized instantly that the insulation they thought they had built around themselves had completely evaporated.

“Julian, darling,” Arthur stammered, changing tactics with oily desperation. “You look dreadful. You shouldn't be in here doing chores while we have guests. Come out to the parlor; we can explain everything about the restructuring documents. It was all just a misunderstanding regarding the tax liabilities. You know how complicated family estates can be.”

Julian stepped out from the shadows of the counter, her voice surprisingly steady when she finally spoke. “A misunderstanding, Uncle Arthur? Is that what you call draining my father’s trust and framing me for wire fraud?”

The silence that followed was absolute. The other guests lingering in the hallway exchanged nervous, bewildered glances, suddenly realizing they had stumbled into something far darker than a mere power outage. Arthur opened his mouth to deny the accusation, but the words died in his throat when Marcus casually tapped the screen, projecting a holographic financial summary onto the dark kitchen ceiling.
