Chapter 13: Counter-Offensive

The weight of the impending federal crisis pressed down on Arthur like a lead ceiling. Fourteen hours. That was all the time he had to dismantle a sophisticated, international dead-man’s switch before a cascade of fraudulent liabilities landed on the desk of every federal prosecutor from Chicago to Washington.

Arthur thanked his investigative team, disconnected the call, and walked briskly back into the living room. Ethan was still watching his cartoon, completely unaware of the digital storm brewing outside their mountain sanctuary.

"Ethan, buddy," Arthur said, keeping his tone light and steady. "Dad has to do some important computer work in the study. I need you to stay right here, watch your show, and let me know if you hear any cars outside, okay?"

Ethan nodded, barely looking away from the screen. "Okay, Dad."
