Chapter 14

The conference room at Marcus Vance’s downtown law office smelled of polished mahogany and fresh paper. The late afternoon light poured through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling city skyline. Ryan sat on one side of the long conference table, his attorney reviewing the final pages of a thick settlement agreement, while Clara sat opposite them with Marcus, her posture calm and composed. Margaret and Heather were nowhere in sight; they had already relocated to a downtown apartment secured by Ryan’s remaining unencumbered liquid funds.

Marcus slid the final document across the mahogany surface toward Ryan, along with a sleek silver fountain pen. “Everything is accounted for, Mr. Vance. The residential property deed is transferred solely to Clara Vance. The commercial credit lines have been separated, and the joint liability has been discharged through the liquidation of the secondary LLC.”

Ryan stared at the document for a long moment. His dark hair was neatly combed, his navy shirt pressed to perfection, but the absolute confidence he had worn on the kitchen island weeks ago was entirely gone. He picked up the pen, feeling the weight of the metal in his hand. He looked across the table at Clara, searching her expression for anger, triumph, or malice. He found none. He found only the calm resolution of a chapter successfully closed.

With slow, deliberate movements, Ryan signed his name on the dotted line. He set the pen down gently on the polished wood, releasing a long, quiet breath that seemed to lift a physical weight from his shoulders.

“It’s done,” Ryan said softly.

“It’s resolved,” Clara corrected him quietly, pulling her copy of the signed agreement toward her and slipping it neatly inside her leather briefcase. She closed the brass clasps with a crisp, satisfying click. “We can both move forward now.”
