Chapter 1: The Blue Light

The rhythmic flashing of red and blue painted the suburban street in harsh, strobing colors. Inside the narrow hallway, the air was still thick with the metallic scent of adrenaline and fear. Sarah sat wrapped in a coarse metallic emergency blanket, her trembling arms clutching her ten-year-old daughter, Lily, and her baby boy, Leo. The heavy thud of the aggressor’s boots was gone, replaced by the crackle of police radios and the steady, authoritative voices of first responders. When the officer knelt before them, his voice was exceptionally gentle. "He’s in custody, ma'am. He can't hurt you anymore." Sarah looked at Lily. The little girl’s face was pale, tear-streaked, but her jaw was set with an unnatural hardness. She still had her finger pressed lightly against Leo's back, a lingering instinct to keep him quiet. The nightmare was over, but as Sarah stared into her daughter’s prematurely aged eyes, she realized the battle for their souls had just begun.
