Chapter 6 - Glass, Blood, And Broken Alibis

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the quiet night, sending heavy lead slugs tearing through the wooden shelving units and ripping bags of concrete mix to shreds. Dust and white powder exploded into the air, creating a suffocating fog that instantly blinded the room.
Arthur screamed, dropping instantly behind the sturdy wooden counter, curling into a tight ball with his hands clamped over his head as glass rained down around him in a glittering, deadly storm.
"Stay down!" Harold bellowed, his voice cutting through the chaos with startling authority. Despite his advanced age, the veteran dropped gracefully to one knee beside the counter, the deadman’s frequency still clutched firmly in his left hand.
The man in the dark suit had already vaulted over a display rack, diving behind a heavy industrial shelving unit near the front entrance to escape the barrage of friendly fire coming from outside. "Cease fire! You idiots, cease fire!" the agent screamed at the top of his lungs, waving frantically toward the shattered storefront.
The gunfire abruptly stopped, leaving only the ringing in Arthur’s ears and the sound of his own ragged, terrified breathing. A thick cloud of drywall dust and gunsmoke hung heavily in the air, illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser that had just pulled up alongside the idling black sedan.
"Arthur! Are you hit?" Harold asked, reaching down to grab the younger man’s shoulder, shaking him gently to snap him out of his shock.
Arthur looked up, his face pale, his eyes wide with unadulterated horror. Blood trickled from a minor cut on his forehead where a stray shard of glass had grazed him. "They... they're shooting at their own man," Arthur stammered, coughing as the acrid smell of cordite filled his lungs. "Why are they shooting at him?"
"Because he failed," Harold replied grimly, keeping low as he peered over the edge of the counter toward the shattered storefront. "And in their line of work, a compromised operative is treated the same way as an enemy combatant."
Heavy footsteps crunched loudly over the broken glass outside the front entrance. Through the swirling dust haze, two figures in tactical gear stepped over the shattered frame, their assault rifles raised and scanning the dim interior of the shop. Behind them, Chief Henderson stepped through the doorway, his uniform immaculate, his face carved into an expression of grim official duty.
"Federal operation! Nobody move!" Chief Henderson shouted, sweeping his service pistol across the room until his eyes locked onto Arthur behind the counter and Harold kneeling beside him. "Vance, put your hands on your head right now! You're harboring a dangerous federal fugitive!"
Arthur stared at the town's chief of police in absolute disbelief, his voice catching in his throat as the terrible reality of Harold’s warning finally crashed over him.
"Chief..." Arthur choked out, holding up his bloody hands. "They... they're trying to kill us!"

"Shut up, Arthur," Henderson barked coldly, stepping further into the store with his weapon drawn. "You've got no idea what you've walked into. Drop the detonator, Miller, or we open fire."
