Chapter 4: The Abandoned Safehouse

The rain battered the windshield of Julian’s sedan as he navigated the slick, winding roads leading out of the city center. In the rearview mirror, the dark silhouette of the funeral home vanished into the gray mist, but the suffocating memory of the scene remained branded behind Julian’s eyes. Beside him, Beatrice sat in tense silence, her hands tightly clutching her black mourning dress. The air inside the car felt thin, charged with a heavy, unspoken dread.

"You haven't told me who we are going to see, Julian," Beatrice finally broke the silence, her voice cautious and strained.

"Marcus," Julian replied flatly, keeping his eyes fixed on the illuminated road ahead. "Uncle Marcus."

Beatrice flinched as if struck. "No. Not Marcus. Anyone but him. You don't understand what he—"

"I don't understand anything right now, Mom!" Julian snapped, the frustration finally boiling over into a sharp roar. He slammed a hand onto the steering wheel. "For the last hour, I've lived through a waking nightmare. I watched my father trapped in a box with his mouth taped shut, and you acted like it was just an inconvenient scheduling conflict! You are going to tell me the truth, and if Marcus is involved in this madness, he is going to tell me too."

Beatrice stared out the side window, watching the blurred city lights streak past in the downpour. She pulled the black veil entirely off her head, tossing it onto the back seat as the heavy burden of her secrets seemingly began to crush her.

"Marcus isn't the architect of this," Beatrice said quietly, her voice devoid of its earlier defensive edge. "He’s just as trapped as we are. Or at least, he was supposed to be."

Julian slowed the car as they approached the outskirts of the industrial district, turning down an overgrown gravel access road flanked by rusted shipping containers and abandoned warehouses. This was where Arthur and Marcus had run their logistics firm before the mysterious buyout a year ago—a buyout that had supposedly netted the family a fortune, but which Julian was now realizing was marked by blood and coercion.

The car bounced over potholes before coming to a halt in front of a corrugated steel warehouse with no lights burning inside. It was dark, cold, and entirely isolated from the rest of the world.

"Stay in the car," Julian instructed, cutting the engine.

"Julian, it's a trap," Beatrice warned, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "Marcus wouldn't stay here unless..."

Before she could finish her sentence, the trunk of the car gave a sudden, violent shudder.

Julian froze. His hand, which had been resting on the door handle, hovered in mid-air. Both mother and son turned slowly to look back through the rear seats into the trunk space.

A muffled, rhythmic thumping echoed from the back. Thud. Thud. Thud.

Arthur was conscious, and he was trying to kick his way out of the sealed mahogany box.

Panic surged through Julian anew. He threw his door open, leaping out into the freezing rain, and sprinted to the back of the car. He popped the trunk latch, lifting the heavy metal lid just enough to let the cold night air rush over the wooden coffin.

"Dad? Dad, hang on!" Julian yelled, dropping his fingers to the metal latches of the casket.

He flipped the side latches open, throwing the wooden lid back. Inside, Arthur gasped violently as the thick black duct tape was finally peeled away from his mouth. He coughed, sucking in huge, ragged lungfuls of air, his eyes wide and wild with a terror that defied description.
