Chapter 10: Shadows of the Past

Even in the sanctuary of the safe house, the echoes of the past occasionally found a way through. One afternoon, while reviewing paperwork concerning her upcoming court depositions, Elena received an encrypted digital message forwarded through Mark’s secure legal network. It was an audio file from an unknown number.
Her hand hovered over the trackpad for a long moment. Her breath caught in her throat as old reflexes flared—the sudden spike of adrenaline, the cold sweat, the instinctive urge to hide. She looked across the room where her baby slept peacefully in the crib, then turned her gaze to Mark, who sat reading across the table.
"It’s from him?" Mark asked, reading the tension in her posture instantly.
"I don't know," Elena whispered.
"You don't have to listen to it," Mark said, standing up and walking over to her side. "You have total control. Delete it."
Elena stared at the screen. For years, listening to Jordan’s voice meant bracing for verbal abuse, manipulation, or gaslighting. But things were different now. She was no longer trapped in his house, subject to his rules. With a deliberate, steady movement, she clicked the play button.
Jordan’s voice filled the room, sounding smaller, raspy, and stripped of its booming corporate confidence. "Elena… if you get this… please. Just talk to me. We can fix this. My lawyers say… they say everything is falling apart. I need you to tell the court it was a misunderstanding."
The plea hung in the air, pathetic and hollow. There was no anger in his voice, no commanding presence—only the desperate scrambling of a man who realized too late that his power was an illusion.
Elena listened without flinching. She felt no anger, no fear, and certainly no pity—only a profound, hollow emptiness where the terror used to live. The man speaking through the speaker no longer held any power over her. He was simply a prisoner of his own making, begging for a lifeline from someone he had tried to destroy.
Without a word, Elena reached out and closed the audio file, dragging it straight into the digital trash bin and emptying it permanently.
"How do you feel?" Mark asked softly.

Elena looked up at him, a genuine, unburdened smile touching her lips. "Like I just slammed the door for the last time."
