Chapter 6: Dawn at the Courthouse

The morning sky over Blackwood County broke in a pale, bruised wash of gray and charcoal, bleeding cold light across the neoclassical columns of the county courthouse. Arthur stood on the broad concrete steps, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his dark zip-up sweater, staring out at the empty square. The chill of the dawn air bit into his skin, but he barely felt it. His phone buzzed continuously in his pocket—a relentless stream of alerts from Dr. Vance, Chloe Martinez, and an unknown federal prosecutor in the state capital who had finally reviewed the digital archive.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb with clinical precision, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt. The rear door swung open, and Edward Sinclair stepped out, flanked by two towering men in charcoal-gray suits who moved with the practiced ease of former federal agents. Edward looked immaculate, dressed in a tailored charcoal overcoat with a silk scarf tucked neatly at his throat. There was no sign of panic on his weathered face, only an icy, calculated fury as his pale blue eyes locked onto Arthur standing at the top of the steps.
The old man climbed the stone stairs with steady, deliberate strides, his private security detail falling back to the perimeter as he approached his son.
""You've made a catastrophic mistake, Arthur,"" Edward said quietly, stopping three steps below him so he could look up with biting authority. ""A federal injunction won't survive a local jurisdictional challenge. By this afternoon, the magistrate will dismiss your petition, and child protective services will return Leo to my custody for his own safety and medical observation.""
Arthur did not blink. He looked down at his father, recognizing the desperate bluff beneath the polished exterior. The old man was running out of chess pieces, and he knew it.
""The magistrate isn't hearing the case today, Edward,"" Arthur replied, his voice level and devoid of triumph. ""Judge Henderson recused himself ten minutes ago after the State Attorney General’s office filed a motion for a change of venue based on systemic corruption in the county court. The new hearing is moving to the federal district court in the capital at noon. Your local fixers don't have jurisdiction there.""
For a fraction of a second, the iron mask of absolute control slipped from Edward’s face, revealing the hollow terror of a man who realized his empire was built on sand. He opened his mouth to speak, but before a word could escape, the heavy oak doors behind Arthur swung open.
Dr. Vance stepped out onto the landing, holding a certified medical discharge form and a secure transport authorization signed by the federal district judge. She looked past Edward as if he were nothing more than a discarded piece of trash on the sidewalk, walking straight up to Arthur and handing him the clipboard.
""Leo is discharged,"" Dr. Vance said clearly, her voice cutting through the morning wind. ""He’s packed his bag, and the hospital social worker has cleared him for immediate release into your custody under federal protective oversight.""

Arthur took the clipboard, his fingers tracing the wet ink of the judge's signature. He looked down at Edward one last time, seeing the absolute defeat settling into the old man’s stoed shoulders.
""Keep your guards away from my son,"" Arthur said, turning his back on the patriarch of Blackwood County for the very last time.
