Chapter 8

The mediation session on Tuesday morning took place in a sterile conference room on the tenth floor of a downtown office building. The room smelled faintly of industrial carpet cleaner and old paper, dominated by a heavy glass table that reflected the harsh fluorescent lights overhead. Marcus, the divorce attorney, sat at one end shuffling papers with practiced indifference, while Elena sat beside him, wearing a sharp navy blue blazer and looking straight ahead. Arthur sat opposite them, flanked by his own newly appointed attorney, a compassionate family law specialist named Sarah Miller who specialized in child-centered transitions.
"We’ve reviewed Mr. Reynolds’ counter-proposal," Marcus announced smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Our clients are willing to dispense with the adversarial litigation track, provided we agree on the primary residential provisions outlined in schedule B."
Sarah Miller leaned forward, resting her forearms on the glass table. "My client is not willing to subject his daughter to a disruptive weekly upheaval. Mr. Reynolds is prepared to offer the family home as a neutral nesting ground, at least for the remainder of this academic year."
Elena’s head snapped up, her eyes widening in surprise. She looked across the table directly at Arthur. "Nesting? You want to keep the house running together?"
"Not together, Elena," Arthur said calmly, keeping his voice steady and measured. "We rotate out of the house. Lily stays in her bedroom, keeps her routine, goes to the same school, and doesn't have to pack a bag every Sunday night. We take turns living in the guest apartment downtown during our off-weeks."
Marcus frowned, opening his mouth to object, but Elena held up a hand, silencing him. She stared at Arthur, processing the enormous personal concession he was making. Maintaining two separate apartments while sharing the primary residence would be financially burdensome and emotionally draining for both of them, but it completely insulated Lily from the trauma of immediate displacement.
"It will be complicated, Arthur," Elena said softly, her voice carrying a trace of the old intimacy they once shared. "We’ll be bumping into each other’s schedules constantly. Are you sure you can handle that?"

"If it keeps Lily from crying over a trash can again, I can handle anything," Arthur replied without hesitation.
Sarah Miller nodded approvingly, pulling a clean document toward herself. "Let's draft the nesting agreement. We can have it finalized by tomorrow afternoon."
