Chapter 14: Confrontation at the Boardroom

The glass-walled conference room on the top floor of the Miller & Vance Financial Tower offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline below. Inside, the mahogany board table was surrounded by five senior directors in immaculate suits, their expressions cold and calculating. At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance, his arms crossed over his chest as he glared across the room at David, who stood upright with his hands resting casually on the back of a leather chair.

""Have you completely lost your mind, David?"" Marcus demanded, his voice echoing sharply against the acoustic ceiling panels. ""The Vanguard group has formally suspended merger talks because of this absurd rumor about a vagrant living on your estate. You’ve brought a liability into your home, and now you expect the board to approve him as lead structural consultant for our new community initiative?""

David did not flinch. He met Marcus’s hostile gaze with unwavering calm. ""Arthur Vance is not a liability, Marcus. He is a licensed engineer with twenty years of experience who was systematically defrauded by the very kind of predatory practices this firm used to endorse.""

One of the senior directors leaned forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. ""David, let’s be practical. The man has no active credentials, no current portfolio, and a police record from his years on the streets. Hiring him is public relations suicide.""

""It’s not public relations,"" David replied, his voice ringing with absolute authority. ""It’s about integrity. For four years, I built my career on the assumption that my family’s survival was my own doing. I ignored the truth: that a better man walked into the fire and gave everything so my daughter could live. I am done building my life on a foundation of lies.""

The conference room fell into a tense, suffocating silence. Marcus sneered, shaking his head in disgust. ""Then consider this your resignation, David. If you choose a homeless drifter over this partnership, you can clear your desk by the end of the day.""

David reached into his tailored suit jacket, pulled out a thick manila folder containing Arthur’s newly reinstated professional credentials and architectural designs, and tossed it squarely onto the center of the mahogany table.

""You don't need to fire me, Marcus,"" David said calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. ""I’m resigning my partnership effective immediately. And I’m taking my clients, my capital, and my integrity with me to fund Arthur’s rebuilding project.""

Before Marcus or the stunned directors could utter another word, David turned on his heel and walked out of the glass boardroom, leaving behind the hollow towers of high finance for a future built on solid ground.
