The Harbor at Dusk

In early August, as Leo approached his first birthday, Mark and Amy took a three-day weekend trip to Rockport, a quiet coastal village on Cape Ann.

Leaving Leo with Sarah for forty-eight hours was their final milestone—an intentional act of trust, proving that their identity as a couple could exist independently of their vigilance as parents.

They stayed at a small, weathered-shingle inn overlooking the harbor. On Saturday evening, as the sun dipped toward the horizon, painting the Atlantic in deep shades of apricot, violet, and gold, they walked hand-in-hand along the granite breakwater of Bearskin Neck.

The air smelled of salt spray, wild beach roses, and woodsmoke from distant lobster shacks.

"One year ago, I was pregnant and terrified," Amy said, stopping to lean against the smooth granite railing, watching the fishing boats return to their moorings. "I thought asking for help meant I was weak. I thought admitting I couldn't do it all would destroy our lives."

"And now?" Mark asked, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her close against the evening chill.

"Now I know that vulnerability is the only thing that keeps us alive," she said, resting her head against his shoulder. "If that night hadn't happened, Mark... if the plates hadn't broken, I might have stayed trapped in that silent, suffocating perfectionism forever. The break was terrifying, but it forced us to build a life based on truth instead of performance."

Mark kissed the top of her head. "I wouldn't trade the woman standing next to me for anyone in the world."

They stood on the breakwater until the stars emerged, clear and steady, over the dark, rolling water.
