Chapter 4

The stainless-steel counters of the estate kitchen gleamed under fluorescent lights, but the atmosphere was thick with tension. Mrs. Gable, the head cook who had managed the Vance household for twenty years, handed Clara a steaming mug of chamomile tea. The older woman’s weathered face was etched with worry as she wiped down the butcher block with a damp cloth.
“You’re playing a very dangerous game, child,” Mrs. Gable whispered, leaning close so the junior staff prepping vegetables at the far end of the island couldn’t hear. “Mr. Vance isn’t a man you cross, but Mrs. Vance is a cornered animal. A cornered animal will bite anyone within reach.”
Clara wrapped her hands around the warm mug, letting the heat seep into her scraped skin. “I didn’t ask for any of this, Mrs. Gable. I just want to do my job, earn my paycheck, and take care of my mother and Lily. I don’t care about their broken vases or their broken marriage.”
“It’s not just a marriage, Clara. It’s a merger,” Mrs. Gable said grimly, lowering her voice further. “Five years ago, Julian Vance wasn’t the cold-hearted tech titan you see today. He was Alessandro Moretti, a brilliant structural engineer who lost everything in a hostile corporate takeover orchestrated by Victoria’s father, the late shipping magnate Arthur Vance. Julian married Victoria to claw his way back to the top of her family’s empire, legally adopting her father’s surname in the process. It was a trade of love for power.”
Clara stared at the cook, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly slamming together with startling clarity. The name Alessandro. The architectural brilliance. The cold, transactional nature of their household. It all made horrifying sense. “He hates her,” Clara murmured.
“He despises what she represents, and she resents that she can never truly own him,” Mrs. Gable replied, nodding slowly. “And now, you’ve walked into the blast radius. Julian looks at you and sees the life he threw away—the engineering, the honesty, the simplicity. That makes you the most dangerous person in this house.”
Before Clara could digest the staggering weight of the cook’s revelation, the kitchen doors swung open with a heavy thud. Julian stood in the frame, his black suit jacket draped over his arm, his shirt sleeves rolled up to the elbows. The kitchen staff immediately froze, lowering their heads in respectful silence.
“Clara,” Julian said, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the commercial refrigerators. “Come to the study. Now.”
Clara set her mug down on the counter, her heart beating a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She offered Mrs. Gable a reassuring nod, then wiped her hands on her apron and walked toward the man who held the power to destroy or save her entire world.
The study was quiet, save for the rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. Julian closed the door behind her, locking it with a firm click. He walked over to his desk, where a laptop screen played high-definition security footage of the parlor from earlier that morning.
Clara watched the screen in silence. The footage was crystal clear. It showed Victoria slipping into the parlor at five-forty in the morning, carefully sliding the brass pin out of the Ming dynasty pedestal, and intentionally tipping the heavy urn over before dusting off her hands and walking away with a cruel grin.
Julian paused the video, the image of his smiling wife frozen on the screen like a modern portrait of malice. He turned to face Clara, his expression haunted.
“She tried to have you fired, Clara. Or worse, prosecuted for property destruction,” Julian said, his voice laced with bitter self-loathing. “This is the life I built for myself. A cage made of glass and poison.”

“Why are you showing me this, Mr. Vance?” Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped closer. “You don’t need to justify your wife’s actions to me. I am just a maid.”
“Stop calling yourself that,” Julian snapped, stepping into her personal space. The intensity in his dark eyes was overwhelming. “You are the only real thing in this entire mausoleum. And I need to know... if I burn this empire to the ground to set things right, will you walk away with me, or are you just as afraid of the truth as everyone else?”
