Chapter 10: Whispers in the Ruins

The defeated operative slumped limply to the floor as Vasiliy loosened his grip, scrambling backward in a blind panic before scrambling out through the splintered doorway and fleeing down the grand staircase into the night. Vasiliy did not pursue him. He knew the message would be delivered word-for-word, and more importantly, he knew that tonight’s attack was merely the opening salvo in a war Victor Vance had finally dared to declare.

Vasiliy stood amidst the wreckage of his master suite. The air was thick with the acrid scent of gunpowder, shattered glass, and splintered mahogany. Shards of the ornate vanity mirror glittered across the Persian rug like scattered diamonds, reflecting the harsh blue glow of the police sirens beginning to wail in the distance down along the coastal highway. Yet, despite the chaos surrounding him, the center of the room remained strangely undisturbed.

Slowly, Vasiliy knelt down beside the massive oak bed, resting his palms flat against the hardwood floor. "Lily," he called softly, his voice losing its lethal edge, replaced by an intimate, protective warmth. "It’s safe to come out now."

A moment later, the vibrant pink butterfly dress emerged from the shadows beneath the bed. Lily crawled out smoothly, her blonde braids still immaculately intact, her expression serene and entirely untouched by the violence that had just transpired mere feet away. She brushed a non-existent speck of dust from her knee, stood up, and looked around the ravaged bedroom with mild curiosity.

"The bad music stopped," Lily observed quietly, tilting her head as she looked up at Vasiliy. "The men who came were very loud on the inside. Their hearts sounded like grinding stones."

Vasiliy let out a heavy, humorless breath that sounded almost like a chuckle. He rose to his feet, towering over the little girl, though his posture lacked any of the imposing stiffness that usually defined his interactions with the world. He reached out and gently adjusted the collar of her pink dress, his calloused fingers brushing against her shoulder with infinite care. "They won't bother us again tonight, Lily. Not in this house."

Downstairs, the heavy footsteps of estate security personnel—belatedly responding to the silent alarms—finally echoed up the staircase, accompanied by the panicked voice of Elena calling out for Mr. Orlov. Vasiliy turned his gaze toward the ruined doorway just as Elena appeared in the aperture, her face white as a sheet, her eyes wide with horror as she took in the shattered glass, the broken door, and the ominous stains near the terrace.

"Mr. Orlov! Oh, my God..." Elena gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth as she rushed forward, her eyes darting anxiously toward Lily to ensure the child was unharmed. "Are you both alright? Should I call the authorities—"

"The police are already on their way," Vasiliy interrupted, his voice returning to its cool, authoritative register, though the underlying harshness was entirely absent when he looked back down at the little girl. "Clean up this wing, Elena. And prepare the secure transport in the underground garage. We are leaving for the northern estate before sunrise."

Elena swallowed hard, her professional training kicking in as she nodded rapidly. She didn't ask questions about the mercenaries, the shattered glass, or the impending war with Victor Vance. She simply looked at the profound, unspoken bond forged between the terrifying master of the Orlov empire and the little girl in the pink butterfly dress, and she knew that everything in their world had shifted forever.
