Chapter 9: The Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the tenth floor of Vanguard Logistics was filled with tension. The long mahogany table was surrounded by senior vice presidents, regional directors, and board members, all whispering quietly among themselves. The empty chair at the head of the table—traditionally reserved for the CEO, a position Ethan had been slated to inherit—served as a stark reminder of the upheaval that had shaken the company over the past week.

When the double doors opened at precisely nine o'clock, absolute silence fell over the room.

Mary walked in, flanked by her father Arthur and Marcus Vance. She wore a tailored ivory blazer over a black silk blouse, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail. She did not look like a jilted bride; she looked like an executive taking absolute command.

She walked straight to the head of the table, placed her leather portfolio down, and remained standing.

"Good morning, everyone," Mary’s voice cut through the heavy air, clear, resonant, and completely composed. "As you are all aware, recent events have necessitated a restructuring of our executive leadership. Ethan Vance’s contract has been terminated for cause, effective immediately."

A murmur rippled through the room. One of the senior vice presidents, a veteran named Robert Vance—no relation to Chloe, but a long-standing ally of Ethan—cleared his throat. "Mary, with all due respect, Ethan was driving our quarterly growth. Removing him without a transition plan could destabilize investor confidence."

Mary turned her piercing gaze directly onto Robert. Her expression remained entirely neutral, which made it all the more terrifying. "Robert, Ethan was driving our quarterly growth straight into a proprietary data leak destined for Victor Thorne. If you consider corporate espionage a solid transition plan, I invite you to pack your office alongside him."

Robert blanched, sinking back into his leather chair without another word. The silence in the room deepened, heavy with the realization that the quiet heiress had evolved into an apex predator.

"Effective immediately," Mary continued, her voice steady and authoritative, "I am assuming the interim role of Chief Executive Officer. Marcus Vance will oversee a complete internal security audit of every regional branch, starting with Boston. We will rebuild our infrastructure on transparency, loyalty, and accountability."

Arthur Sterling sat back in his chair, watching his daughter with an expression of profound, unadulterated pride. The company he had built was no longer just his legacy; it was hers, secured through fire and ice.
