Chapter 5

The atmosphere in the mansion’s lower-level security office was cool and dim, illuminated only by the faint, rhythmic blinking of server rack lights. Julian sat in front of the master terminal, his fingers dancing across the keyboard with practiced ease. As the estate’s chief operations and tech consultant for the past two years, Julian knew the architecture of the house better than anyone—including Eleanor. Officer Vance stood directly behind him, watching the monitor intently while two other responding officers guarded the doorway.

“How long until you pull the exact timestamp?” Vance asked, his voice low in the quiet room.

“Just a few seconds,” Julian replied, his eyes fixed on the lines of code and file directories scrolling past. “Eleanor had administrative privileges, but she was terrible with cybersecurity. She probably thought deleting the local logs from her desktop app would wipe the drive. She didn't realize the hardware stores a hard-backup mirror offsite in a secure cloud relay.”

Clara stood near the corner of the small room, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. The adrenaline had faded completely, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. Yet she forced herself to stay alert. The police had escorted Eleanor out to a patrol car parked outside, but the legal battle was only beginning. Without undeniable proof, Eleanor’s lawyers would twist the narrative by morning, painting Clara as a deranged orphan grasping for control of a multi-million-dollar estate.

“Got it,” Julian murmured, clicking the mouse.

On the large monitor, a high-definition video file populated the screen. The timestamp read 19:42:15—just twenty minutes prior. Julian hit play.

The camera angle was positioned high in the corner of the grand foyer, capturing the entire second-floor balcony and the stairs below. The image was crystal clear. On screen, Clara could be seen walking toward the railing to look down at the foyer. Moments later, Eleanor stepped out from the shadows of the hallway behind her. There was no hesitation. Eleanor’s hands came up, planting squarely against Clara’s back, shoving her forcefully over the white railing. The video showed Clara’s desperate, flailing descent, followed immediately by Julian sprinting into frame from the hallway and diving to catch her inches from the marble floor.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence as the video looped back to the beginning.

Officer Vance exhaled slowly, shaking his head. “Well, that removes any ambiguity. It’s clear-cut attempted murder in the first degree. Premeditated, calculated, and captured in 4K resolution.”

Clara felt a hot tear slip down her cheek, but she did not wipe it away. It wasn’t a tear of sadness; it was the release of a massive weight pressing down on her soul. “She raised me after my mother died,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking slightly with bitter irony. “I thought she loved us. I thought she was just cold because of her age.”

“Greed has no age limit, Clara,” Julian said softly, turning his chair to face her. He reached out and gently took her hand, his thumb tracing her knuckles. “She wanted the entire estate liquidated and funneled into her private shell corporations. Your father’s will was the only thing standing in her way.”

Vance tapped his radio, calling his team. “Henderson, secure the master console. Make sure this file is cryptically hashed and transferred directly to my unit’s encrypted drive. We have our ironclad probable cause. Let’s head down to booking; we’re going to need a warrant for a full forensic asset audit of Mrs. Sterling’s personal accounts.”

Julian stood up, pulling Clara close to his side. The digital ghost of Eleanor’s crime flickered silently on the monitor behind them, sealing her fate once and for all.
