Chapter 9

The deafening roar of the amphitheater reached a fever pitch as the four-horse chariots lined up along the starting chalk of the arena floor below. The trumpeters blew a resounding fanfare that rattled the stone architecture and reverberated in the chests of everyone present. It was the exact moment of maximum distraction.
Julian kicked open the heavy oak access door leading out onto the high stone gallery, shielding Cassian with his muscular frame as they stepped directly out onto the parapet overlooking the massive crowd. The stone ledge was narrow, perched high above the sheer drop to the spectator tiers below. Julian unrolled the first parchment scroll, holding it securely against the evening wind, while Cassian stood bravely beside him, raising his hands—still wrapped in bloodstained bandages—high above his head.
"Citizens of Rome!" Julian’s voice, amplified by the natural acoustic design of the ancient amphitheater, carried clearly across the vast bowl of the stadium.
For a few seconds, the roar of the crowd masked his words, but as those nearest the upper gallery turned and saw the unmistakable figure of the former treasurer Cassian—whom the entire city believed had been executed that very morning—a stunned silence rippled outward like a shockwave. The trumpets stopped abruptly. The charioteers reined in their horses, grinding the race to a sudden halt.
Down in the imperial box, the magistrates bolted upright in their gilded seats. The High Priestess went completely rigid, her face draining of all color as she stared up at the gallery in sheer disbelief.
"Look up!" Cassian shouted, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet stadium with surprising strength. "You were told there was a famine! You were taxed into starvation! Here is the proof, signed by your own magistrates!"

Julian held up the ledgers, letting the stamped wax seals catch the flickering torchlight so the entire assembly could see the authentic markers of the imperial treasury. Pandemonium broke out in the stands. The initial shock turned into angry murmurs, which rapidly escalated into furious shouting as the realization of the betrayal settled over the thousands of deceived citizens.
"Seize them! Traitors!" the chief magistrate screamed from the box below, his face contorted with panic as he waved frantically at the security guards stationed near the stairwells.
