Chapter 4

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the penthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the room where Elena sat unmoving, having skipped sleep entirely. Her laptop remained open, displaying the scanned probate documents and financial trails she had uncovered during her nocturnal investigation. A sharp knock at the front door broke the heavy silence. Elena stiffened, glancing at the wall clock. It was barely eight in the morning. She walked slowly toward the foyer, looking through the peephole to find a figure she had hoped not to see for a very long time.
It was Clara. The older woman stood alone in the hallway, wearing a tailored black coat, her silver hair neatly pinned back, holding a single black leather briefcase instead of her usual bouquet of roses. Her face was pale, etched with deep lines of exhaustion and quiet desperation. Elena unlocked the door and pulled it open just wide enough to block the entrance, her expression an unyielding mask of ice. Clara looked up, her dark eyes swimming with a mixture of fear and pleading. “Elena, please. May I come in? We need to talk before Julian finds out I am here.”
“You have a lot of nerve showing up at my home after what you orchestrated yesterday,” Elena said, her voice dangerously quiet and level. “You deliberately ruined my wedding. You dropped a bomb designed to destroy my marriage before it even started. And now you expect me to invite you inside for tea?” Clara flinched as if struck, her hands tightening around the handle of the briefcase. “I didn’t do it to hurt you, Elena. I did it to save you. And to save Julian from a lifetime of living a monstrous lie. If you knew the truth about who he really is, and who I really am to him, you would have run away months ago.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Try me. Tell me the truth right now, or get out of my building before I call security and have you physically removed.” Clara swallowed hard, taking a hesitant step across the threshold as Elena reluctantly yielded space. The older woman placed the briefcase on the coffee table, unlatched the metal clasps with trembling fingers, and pulled out a thick stack of faded yellow photographs and legal certificates. She laid them out carefully, each document a physical piece of a shattered puzzle that threatened to bury Julian under an avalanche of deception and legal ruin.
“Julian is not who he says he is,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion as she pointed to a birth certificate dated nearly thirty years ago. “And the money that pays for this luxury penthouse, the clothes on your back, the company he built—none of it belongs to him. It belongs to the family of the man whose life was destroyed to create the life Julian is currently living.” Elena stared down at the documents, her heart pounding against her ribs as the terrifying magnitude of the deception became entirely clear. The man she thought she knew was a stranger living on borrowed time and stolen identity.
