Chapter 9: Unwelcome Visitors

The freshly poured driveway cured under the warm suburban sun over the next three days, hardening into a smooth, gray expanse that looked immaculate. The tension between Marcus and Evelyn had dissolved into a quiet, respectful neighborly accord. They occasionally exchanged nods over the fence or shared brief updates about municipal trash collection schedules, a massive improvement from their explosive introduction.

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, the fragile peace of the cul-de-sac was broken by the sharp rumble of a heavy diesel engine.

A black municipal SUV pulled up directly in front of Marcus’s house, idling noisily with its exhaust pipe puffing dark smoke into the pristine air. Two men in dark suits stepped out from the vehicle, holding clipboards and official-looking county badges pinned to their belts. They didn't look like routine zoning inspectors; their expressions were brisk, corporate, and entirely devoid of local warmth.

Evelyn appeared on her front porch almost instantly, her instincts immediately triggered by the arrival of unannounced county officials. She walked down her steps, wearing her usual patterned blouse and beige pants, her eyes narrowing as she approached the driveway.

Marcus stepped out of his front door, wiping sawdust from his dark grey t-shirt, walking down to meet the visitors at the edge of the newly cured concrete.

“Can I help you?” Marcus asked, his tone guarded.

The taller of the two men, a sharp-featured individual with slicked-back gray hair, flashed his identification badge briefly. “Mr. Marcus Vance? And Ms. Evelyn Vance?”

“Just Evelyn Vance,” she corrected sharply, stepping up beside Marcus. “And you are?”

“Agent Henderson, county department of municipal expansion and infrastructure,” the man said smoothly, not bothering to introduce his silent partner. He pulled a thick document from his leather portfolio and flipped it open. “We are here to serve a notice of eminent domain acquisition regarding the outer four feet of your respective properties.”

The words hit the air like a physical blow. Marcus stared at the man in disbelief, while Evelyn’s face drained of all color, her hands instantly clenching into tight fists at her sides.

“Eminent domain?” Marcus repeated loudly, the blood rushing to his ears. “For what? There’s nothing out here except residential homes.”

“The city council approved a multi-lane bypass expansion project last night during a closed emergency session,” Agent Henderson replied coldly, tapping the paper with his pen. “The northern boundary of your properties, including your newly poured driveway, falls directly within the designated clearance zone. Construction begins in thirty days.”
