Chapter 1

The hallway of the ancestral manor smelled of old cedar and expensive wool. Sunlight cut through the high windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the silent air. Five-year-old Lily stood in that patch of golden light, her blonde hair neatly tied back with a velvet ribbon. In her small hands, she clutched a worn white stuffed rabbit, its fabric grayed from years of affectionate dragging. Her innocent blue eyes focused on the wainscoting near the baseboard where a loose panel concealed a dark void.
“The red box is it,” Lily said softly, her voice barely carrying above the ticking of the grandfather clock at the end of the hall.
Seated in a wingback chair inside the adjacent study, thirty-year-old Arthur froze. His short reddish-brown hair seemed to bristle against his collar, and his navy blue suit suddenly felt too tight. His eyes widened in sudden shock, his mouth remaining slightly open as the breath caught in his throat. How could she possibly know? He had buried that secret beneath layers of concrete and time, believing it safe from prying eyes.
“How did you know about this?” Arthur demanded, his voice cracking slightly before he regained his composure.
Before Lily could answer, Elena appeared at the doorway. At thirty years old, she looked striking yet entirely undone. She wore a pristine white wedding dress with intricate lace details, the veil thrown back over her blonde hair. Her face was frozen in absolute horror and disbelief, one trembling hand pressed hard over her mouth to muffle a gasp. The wedding was supposed to happen in an hour. Instead, the foundation of their lives was cracking open right at their feet.
Arthur abruptly stood up from his chair in the room, his fists clenched tightly by his sides. He stared intensely at the small child, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
“Stay right where you are,” Arthur said angrily, a dangerous edge sharpening his tone.

Lily did not move. Instead, tears began streaming silently down her pale cheeks. She looked up at them with a deeply distressed expression, holding the white stuffed rabbit closer to her chest as she let out a soft, heartbreaking whimper. The red box behind the panel held answers neither adult was prepared to face.
