Chapter 15

Jin-woo stood beside Chen on the wooden porch, looking out across the vast, rolling expanse of the ocean where the water met the sky in a clean, unbroken horizon. The sun was climbing higher, bathing the coastline in a warm, golden light that washed away the shadows of the past months.

“You’re safe here, Madame Chen,” Jin-woo said quietly, his hands resting on the wooden railing. “The federal trials concluded this morning. Every major player from the shipping conglomerate received multiple life sentences without parole. The infrastructure has been dismantled from the foundation up.”

Chen nodded slowly, her thumb gently stroking the glass of her husband’s framed photograph. “And the ledger?”

“Archived permanently in the national library,” Jin-woo replied. “A monument to what one man noticed when everyone else looked away.”

Down the coast, a single gull cried out, banking sharply against the wind before disappearing into the bright blue sky. Lin’s car pulled up behind Jin-woo’s sedan, and Lin stepped out, walking up the path with her dark coat open, her expression relaxed and at peace. She didn't interrupt immediately, pausing at the base of the porch to take in the quiet harmony of the scene.

Chen turned to face both detectives, her posture straight, her presence grounded in the reality of the present moment. She stepped forward, offering her hand to Jin-woo, and then to Lin, her grip firm, warm, and entirely human.

“The alignment is correct,” Chen said softly, a quiet sense of finality in her voice.

Lin smiled, her eyes reflecting the bright coastal light. “Always has been, Madame Chen. You just had to let the wind blow through the house.”

They stayed on the porch for a few more minutes, sharing the silent, comfortable understanding of people who had walked through the fire together and emerged on the other side. Then, Jin-woo and Lin turned back toward their vehicle, leaving the cottage behind as the ocean continued its timeless rhythm against the shore. The case was closed, the ledger was safe, and the world—for at least one small corner—was finally in order.
