Chapter 11

Julian’s footsteps crunched hurriedly against the frost-covered gravel of the courtyard. He kept his head down, pulling the collar of his wool coat high against the wind. His emergency bank accounts had been frozen by order of the board an hour ago, and his private safe in the East Wing had already been sealed by the estate bailiffs. He was fleeing with whatever physical valuables he could salvage from his private desk—bearer bonds, foreign currency reserves, and incriminating correspondence that could implicate his co-conspirators in the municipal government.

"Where do you think you're going, Uncle?"

The voice rang out clearly from the stone balcony above, cutting through the cold evening air like a blade. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his shoulders tensing. He slowly looked up to see Eleanor leaning over the railing, watching him with cold detachment, while Aurelia stood a few paces behind her in the shadows.

Julian forced a tight, desperate smile, though his eyes darted frantically toward the open wrought-iron gates just fifty yards away. "Eleanor, my dear. I was merely... retrieving some personal effects. A misunderstanding in the boardroom, nothing more."

"You're running," Eleanor stated flatly, pushing away from the railing. "You spent twenty years stealing from the people in those mills, building an empire on lies and suffering, and the moment the floor caves in, you sneak out like a thief in the night."

Julian’s polite veneer finally cracked, revealing the snarling ambition underneath. "You know nothing about the real world, girl! Empires aren't built on charity and sentimentality. They are built on leverage, discipline, and sacrifices! Your father understood that. He was weak for keeping you alive, and now you're going to ruin everything he spent his life building!"

"My father was a coward who traded his own child for a ledger entry," Eleanor replied, her voice echoing steadily across the courtyard. "And you are just a petty thief wearing a tailored suit."

Before Julian could hurl another insult, the heavy wooden doors of the carriage house swung open. Arthur and two estate guards stepped out, blocking the pathway to the gates. They moved with calm, deliberate authority, their heavy coats brushing against the damp stone. Julian spun around, realizing he was fully trapped between the balcony above and the guards below.

"Hold your ground," Julian snarled, reaching frantically into his coat pocket for a small ivory-handled derringer.

"Don't do it, Julian," Aurelia warned from the balcony, her voice ringing with absolute finality as she stepped into the light. "The guards have orders to shoot if you draw a weapon. It’s over."
