Chapter 9

Arthur Vance stepped out from behind the massive mahogany desk, his posture upright and authoritative despite his advanced age. He buttoned the front of his tailored charcoal suit jacket with deliberate slowness, keeping his cold, calculating eyes locked on his son. "You always had a penchant for melodrama, Julian," Arthur said, his tone dripping with patronizing amusement. "Bringing your bride into a corporate war zone. What were you hoping to achieve? Did you honestly believe you could walk away with the decryption keys and start a quaint little bakery in Vermont?" Julian didn't flinch, his hand remaining steady near his weapon. "I didn't come here to negotiate a retreat, Arthur. I came to finish what you started five years ago. The federal task force has the real-time financial logs from the secondary servers. Your little ghost act is over."

A brief flash of genuine irritation crossed Arthur’s face before he quickly masked it with a chilling smile. "The federal task force relies on data that can be altered, Julian. Or, more accurately, data that can be completely erased before it ever reaches a grand jury." He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the glittering, rain-streaked expanse of the city below. "Marcus is downstairs right now, clearing out the last of the physical backups. By sunrise, there won't be a single piece of paper or digital trace linking me to any wrongdoing. And as for you... well, an unfortunate break-in by disgruntled former employees makes for a very tidy police report." Elena stepped forward, her voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room. "You think the police will just buy that? We have copies of the transfer orders. We have the metadata."

Arthur turned slowly, letting out a dry, humorless chuckle. "My dear child, metadata can be manipulated by anyone with root access. And who has root access? Julian Vance. The disgraced financial analyst who staged his own father's ruin to cover his tracks." He pointed an accusing finger directly at Julian. "He built the very algorithm that drained the accounts. He’s the villain of this tragedy, Elena. He just used a wedding ring to buy your silence." Julian felt a surge of rage threaten to break through his carefully maintained composure. He took a hard step forward, closing the distance between them. "Don't drag her into this, Arthur. This is between you and me. It has always been between you and me." Arthur stared down at his son, his expression hardening into absolute ruthlessness. "Then prove it," he challenged softly, sliding a heavy manila folder across the polished glass surface of a nearby side table. "Sign the confession, Julian. Take the fall for the embezzlement, and I’ll let your bride walk out of this building unharmed. You can play the martyr, just like you always wanted."
