Chapter 8: The Blueprint of Power

The dim glow of the burner phone illuminated Maya’s focused face as she studied the architectural schematic displayed on the small screen. Arthur had managed to send her the floor plans for Apex Logistics’ private downtown penthouse suite—a heavily fortified citadel of glass, steel, and corporate hubris located on the forty-second floor of the city's tallest skyscraper.

Maya sat cross-legged on a wooden pallet in the corner of the abandoned printing press, her grey sneakers tucked beneath her black sweatpants. She wore her dry thermal hoodie now, the dark blue zip-up jacket draped over her shoulders to stave off the lingering chill. Her dark braids were tied back into a tight bun, keeping every strand away from her face.

According to Arthur’s architectural blueprints, the master ledger—the physical, leather-bound accounting book containing the original signatures of every executive who signed off on deferred truck maintenance—was kept inside a biometric floor safe hidden behind a false panel in Harrison Vance’s private study.

“It’s suicide, Maya,” Arthur’s voice crackled through the secure earpiece she had plugged into her phone. “The penthouse has biometric iris scanners, 24-hour private security patrols, and direct panic rooms linked to the local precinct. You can’t just walk through the front doors.”

“I’m not going through the front doors,” Maya replied softly, tracing the perimeter lines of the rooftop helipad on her phone screen. “I’m going through the sky.”

The plan was audacious, relying entirely on stealth, timing, and the fact that corporate executives rarely expected anyone to attack their stronghold from above after a federal raid. While the company was distracted by the government investigators swarming their primary office building downtown, Harrison Vance would retreat to his residential penthouse to shred physical evidence and coordinate his defense strategy.

Maya gathered her gear, packing the titanium micro-SD card, the heavy tactical flashlight, a multi-tool set, and a spool of high-tensile climbing cord into her dark backpack. She zipped it shut with a crisp, decisive sound, swinging it over both shoulders and adjusting the straps until the weight rested evenly across her spine.

She stood up, stretching her limbs to ensure her reflexes were sharp after hours of sitting in the damp warehouse. Her martial arts training had taught her that fear was just another physiological signal—a rush of adrenaline meant to sharpen focus, not to paralyze action.

Stepping out of the loading door into the cool, post-storm air of the industrial district, she hailed a passing cab with a sharp whistle. She gave the driver an address three blocks away from the Apex Tower, leaning back against the worn vinyl seat as the vehicle merged into the swirling neon current of city traffic.

As the towering glass monolith of the Apex building grew larger in the windshield, gleaming like a jagged crystal shard against the midnight sky, Maya felt a cold calm settle over her. Her father’s ghost was riding with her tonight. Every step she took brought her closer to the truth, and no amount of corporate wealth or private security could shield Harrison Vance from the reckoning that was coming through his rooftop.
