Chapter 14: The Warrant

The glass of whiskey in Richard Vanderbilt’s hand froze halfway to his mouth. The heavy silence that instantly filled the sitting alcove was absolute, broken only by the distant, muffled ticking of the hallway grandfather clock. Eleanor’s composed facade finally fractured completely, a look of genuine shock replacing her icy detachment.
Richard slammed the glass down onto the mahogany bar cart, amber liquid splashing over the rim. "Federal Marshals? On what authority?"
"On the authority of federal child protection statutes, Mr. Vanderbilt," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.
Step by measured step, a tall man in a dark federal suit strode into the room, flanked by two uniformed state troopers and a familiar figure in a heavy leather vest—the truck driver from the diner. The federal agent flashed a leather badge case bearing the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice.
"I am Agent Miller," the man stated, his grey eyes sweeping over Richard, Eleanor, and finally resting on Clara with a nod of quiet acknowledgment. "We received a verified structural schematic detailing an unauthorized secondary containment unit within this residence, along with an eyewitness deposition regarding an endangered minor."
Richard stepped forward, his imposing frame squaring up against the federal agent, a last desperate vestige of arrogance clinging to his posture. "You are trespassing on private property without proper local coordination. This is an egregious overreach, and my legal team will—"
"Your legal team can speak to the federal magistrate in Harrisburg," Agent Miller interrupted smoothly, holding up a signed judicial warrant. "Right now, we are executing a court-ordered welfare check on seven-year-old Leo Vanderbilt. Where is the boy?"
