Chapter 5: The War of Affidavits

By morning, the retaliation had begun.

David sat at Martha’s rustic pine kitchen table, his laptop open alongside a steaming mug of black coffee. His corporate email was inundated with urgent notices from the firm’s executive board. Beatrice had already convened an emergency meeting of the Vance Family Trust, alleging that David had suffered an acute breakdown, assaulted his sister, and absconded with an incapacitated spouse and an endangered infant.

His phone buzzed. It was Julian, his college roommate and an uncompromising civil rights attorney in the city.

"David, where are you?" Julian asked without greeting. "Your mother’s lawyer just filed an ex-parte petition for emergency custody of Maya in probate court. They attached an affidavit from Dr. Arthur Vance claiming Clara is suicidal."

"It's a lie, Julian," David said, his voice cold and steady. "They battered her. They locked her in the master bedroom, took away her infant, and tried to force a psychiatric committal so they could seize custody."

A sharp intake of breath echoed over the line. "Do you have evidence?"

"I have high-resolution photographs of defensive wounds, fingernail gouges on her wrists, and blunt force trauma to her orbital bone," David replied. "I took them last night with a time-stamped camera. Martha also completed an independent medical evaluation and had it notarized at the local bank an hour ago."

"Good man," Julian said, his legal instincts kicking into gear. "Send me everything immediately. If Beatrice wants a court battle, we aren't going to family court to play defense. We’re going to the county sheriff’s department to file criminal assault and unlawful imprisonment charges."

David looked down the hallway toward the guest room. The morning light was spilling across the quilt where Clara lay asleep, one arm instinctively draped over Maya’s crib. For months, he had compromised his values to protect his corporate standing, believing that loyalty to his family name was his primary duty.

Now, looking at the truth stripped bare, he felt nothing but relief. The tie that bound him to the boardroom was severed.

"File the charges, Julian," David instructed. "No settlements. No quiet non-disclosure agreements. Burn the bridge down."
