Chapter 8 - The Breach

The harsh beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the dusty gloom of the basement archives, sweeping across the rows of metal shelving units.

“Drop your weapons and put your hands where we can see them!” shouted the lead marshal, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls with authoritative finality.

Bruno instantly released Marcus, stepping smoothly into a tactical defensive posture while keeping his hand resting casually inside his jacket near a concealed firearm. Gabriel didn’t flinch. He slowly slipped the heavy gold signet ring into his pocket, his expression remaining an unreadable mask of intense focus.

Marcus crumpled to the floor, gasping for air as he clutched his bruised throat. “Over here! They’re right here! They have the files!”

Three federal marshals rushed down the aisle, their dark tactical gear and drawn sidearms making it abundantly clear that cooperation was the only immediate option. The lead marshal, a tall, weathered man with sharp gray eyes named Agent Vance—no relation to Gabriel—stepped forward and holstered his weapon just an inch, though his hand remained close.

“Mr. Vance. Mr. Sterling’s legal team filed an emergency federal injunction ten minutes ago,” Agent Vance stated, reading off a digital tablet. “You are currently in possession of stolen corporate property and interfering with a court-mandated custody transfer.”

Gabriel didn’t raise his voice. He stood his ground, towering over the marshals with an immovable dignity.

“That property was stolen from my family thirty years ago, Agent,” Gabriel said, his tone dead calm. “And the custody order was obtained through perjury, bribery, and financial fraud. Look in that briefcase on the floor. Every document required to strip Arthur Sterling of his licenses, his assets, and his freedom is right there.”

Agent Vance glanced down at the open briefcase resting near Marcus’s knees. He looked back up at Gabriel, hesitating for a fraction of a second.

“If those documents are authentic, Mr. Vance, they go through proper legal channels as evidence in a federal corruption probe,” the agent replied stiffly. “They don’t give you the right to take the law into your own hands. Now step away from the desk.”

“I didn't take the law into my hands, Agent,” Gabriel said, stepping forward until he was eye-to-eye with the federal officer. “I protected my child. And if you take one step closer to the trauma bunker upstairs before you read those files, you’ll have to get through me first.”

Bruno subtly shifted his weight, preparing for a chaotic firefight in the narrow basement aisle. Marcus whimpered on the floor, curling into a tight ball as he realized he was trapped between two unstoppable forces.

Agent Vance stared hard at Gabriel, measuring the older man’s resolve. Slowly, deliberately, the agent reached down and closed the lid of the briefcase, locking the metal latches with a sharp click.

“You’ve got thirty minutes before local SWAT reinforces this facility on Arthur’s orders, Mr. Vance,” Agent Vance whispered quietly so the recording devices on his tactical vest wouldn't catch it. “Make sure those files tell the story you think they do. Because once I open this officially, there’s no turning back for anyone.”

Agent Vance turned to his subordinates. “Secure the perimeter. No one enters or leaves without my direct authorization.”

As the marshals stepped back to secure the aisle, Gabriel’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket. He pulled it out; the caller ID showed the encrypted secure line from the neonatal trauma bunker upstairs. He pressed accept immediately.

“Gabriel,” a breathless, terrified voice whispered on the other end—it wasn't the nurse, but a voice Gabriel hadn’t expected to hear for another week. “Gabriel, they’re in the bunker. They took her.”
